CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEB. 29, 2004
CALVIN BASKETBALL HEADED TO CLEVELAND FOR NCAA III TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND
GAME
GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin men's basketball team is headed to the Cleveland
suburb of University Heights, Ohio for a first round NCAA III Tournament game.
Calvin (19-8) will face host John Carroll University (22-5) Thursday night at
the DeCarlo Varsity Center with a tipoff time yet to be determined.
The winner of Thursday's first round game will travel to Wittenberg (24-4)
for a second round game Saturday night in Springfield, Ohio.
The champion of the MIAA Tournament this past weekend, Calvin will be making
its 14th trip to the NCAA III Tournament including its first since the
2000-2001 season. Calvin is 23-14 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play.
Thursday's game will mark just the second-ever meeting between Calvin and
John Carroll with the only previous meeting coming during the 1994-95 season
with Calvin claiming a 62-56 victory at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
It will also mark the second straight appearance for Calvin against an Ohio
Athletic Conference opponent in NCAA III Tournament play as the Knights met
Ohio Northern in a second round game of the 2001 Tournament with Ohio Northern
claiming a 79-68 victory.
In fact, Calvin will be facing an OAC opponent in the NCAA III Tournament for
the 14th time with the Knights holding a 2-11 record in 13 prior tournament
games. Calvin's last victory against an OAC foe in the NCAA III Tournament
came during the second round of the 1993 NCAAs with the Knights claiming a
90-68 victory at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Both of Calvin's victories over OAC
foes have come against Otterbein.
John Carroll advanced to the NCAA III Tournament with a 76-74 victory over
Mount Union Saturday night in the OAC Tournament Championship game. The Blue
Streaks also captured the OAC regular season title with a 14-4 regular season
mark.
Over the last two years, John Carroll has not lost at home, compiling an
impressive 28-0 mark at home during that span.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament when the
50-team field was announced Sunday evening. Only six (Pool C) at-large bids
were available in the 50-team field and the bids went to Rochester (NY), Johns
Hopkins (MD), Gwynedd-Mercy (PA), Messiah (PA), Millikin (IL) and Washington
University (MO).
The MIAA's representative is Albion with the Britons traveling to Wilmington
(OH) for a first round game Wednesday night.
Calvin finishes the season with a 23-4 record, one victory short of matching
the Calvin single-season record for victories. The Knights also captured the
MIAA's regular season title, Calvin's 10th in women's basketball which is
more than any other MIAA member school.
