SPORTS REPORT (PART ONE) FOR FEB. 28, 2004

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Three individuals will represent the Calvin women's swimming and diving team at the NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 11-13 in St. Peter's, Missouri.

The NCAA unveiled the official "psyche sheet" Friday afternoon and senior Sara TerHaar, sophomore Abby Johnson and freshman Rebekah Weima have qualified for the national meet from Calvin.

TerHaar hails from Bradenton, Florida and is a graduate of Bradenton Christian High School. A diver, TerHaar will be making her first appearance at the national meet and will compete on the one and three-meter boards. At the MIAA Championships last week, TerHaar repeated as league champion on the three-meter board and took second on the one-meter board.

Johnson is from Grand Haven and a graduate of Grand Haven High School. Johnson will be making her second consecutive trip to the national meet and will be competing in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 butterfly events. Johnson took second in the 200 and 400 IM at the MIAA Championships last week while finishing third in the 200 butterfly.

Weima is a native of Caledonia and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. She will be making her first trip to the national meet and will compete in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Weima is the top seed in the 200 freestyle and the second seed in the 100 freestyle. At the MIAA Championships last week, Weima captured league titles in the 100 and 200 freestyle and earned a second place finish in the 50 freestyle.

All three individuals were members of the All-MIAA women's swimming and diving team announced earlier this week with Weima receiving the league's MVP award.

A year ago Calvin took 34th at the NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with 28 points.
