MEN'S CLUB ICE HOCKEY
JACKSON - Calvin's 25-game win streak is over. Ranked number one in the latest ACHA Division III club hockey standings, Calvin suffered its first defeat of the year on Saturday evening, falling to rival Hope 6-2 in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Conference Tournament Championship game.
Calvin had topped the Flying Dutchmen in three earlier meetings this year but on Saturday night, it was all Hope as it jumped out a 2-0 lead through one period and led 3-0 heading into the final period of play. Calvin came back to cut the lead to one on third period goals by Dan Veeneman (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Elijah DeGroot (Sarnia, ON) but Hope cut short the Knight comeback with three unanswered goals to claim the win.
"Hope really took it to us tonight," said Calvin head coach Mike Petrusma. "Give them credit. They played great and had us on our heels all night. Hopefully we can learn from the loss heading into the national tournament."
Calvin and Hope could meet again in the ACHA Division III National Tournament scheduled for March 3-6 in Phoenix, Arizona. Both teams have received bids to the national tournament and are placed in opposite pools but could meet in a potential national championship game.
