CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2004 (PART ONE)

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams concluded their indoor campaigns Friday night at the Grand Rapids Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Both teams had a collection of banner performances including a handful of first place finishes.

In the women's competition, Calvin senior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) continued her strong indoor season by taking first place in the shot put with a throw of 44-3 with sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) taking sixth (36-4). Freshman Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a big night in winning the high jump with a leap of 5-4. Bolt was part of a 1-4-9 Calvin finish with freshman Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) placing fourth (5-3) and sophomore Kim Vanderzee (Seattle, WA) placing ninth (5-1).

Other highlights for the Calvin women included first place finishes by senior Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) in the 5,000 meters (18:21.14) and senior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) in the 3,000 meters (10:17.90). Other notables included junior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) placing second in the 55 meters (7.37) and fourth in the 200 meters (26.45); junior Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) finishing second in the 400 meters (49.78) and sophomore Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing third in the 800 meters (2:18.64).

In the men's competition, Calvin was paced by a strong distance crew. In the 5,000 meters, Calvin took five of the top six spots with freshman Bill Reynolds (Newton Square, PA) winning the race with a time of 15:30.83 while junior Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH) was second (15:45.22). In the 3,000 meters, Calvin graduate Joel Klooster took first place in 8:32.32 with senior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) close behind in second (8:33.90) and senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in third (8:36.18). In the one-mile run, junior Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) ran up front with U.S. Olympic hopeful and eventual winner Paul McMullen. McMullen took first in 4:12.28 with Yazzie taking second (4:19.50). Senior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) also had a strong run, finishing fifth in 4:22.62.

Junior Reuben Sportel (South Christian HS) also had a strong night, taking second in the 55 meter hurdles (8.10) and sixth in the 200 meters (24.08). Other notables included sophomore Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fourth in the 400 meters (51.9), sophomore Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) taking third in the triple jump (42-10 ¾) and sophomore Justin Heslinga (Kalamazoo Christian HS) taking sixth in the 55 meter hurdles (8.56).

Calvin will now break until March 20 when it begins its outdoor season at the January Preimer Invitational at South Alabama University.
