CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEB. 12, 2004

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

GRAND RAPIDS*Rochester College is the latest victim of the Calvin Women's Basketball team. The Lady Knights picked up their 16th win in a row Thursday night against an overmatched Warrior squad 94-36. The record for most wins in a row stands at 22 straight set by the 1994-95 team.

The game was never close, as a quicker and more talented Knight squad abused the Warrior post and utilized a 12-0 run to jump out to a quick 12-1 lead. Freshman Lisa Winkle (South Christian) layed in the first three buckets for Calvin and Junior Rita Ouwinga (McBain Northern Michigan Christian) splashed in a few jumpers during the run. The Knights proceeded to outscore the Warriors 33-20 to head into the half with a 45-21 lead. Calvin also shot 53% form the field, while Rochester connected on 36% of its shots.

Any hopes of a comeback for the Warriors were crushed by a 19-3 run by the Knights early on in the second half. Calvin outscored Rochester 49-15 in the half, powered by a barrage of lay-ups.

The Lady Knights were 39-74 (53%) from the field on the game, including a 31% from three-point land. Rochester only managed to connect on 23% of its shots during the game, including a dismal 11% in the second half. The Knights were active on the boards, out rebounded the Warriors 46-32. Junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian) pulled down 8 boards and Winkle corralled 7.

A balanced scoring attack left four Lady Knights with double figures on the evening. Winkle led all scorers with a game-high 15 points on 7-8 shooting, while junior Lesa Holleman (SW Minnesota Christian) netted a career-high 14 points on 5-6 shooting. Sophomore Brandi Benthem (McBain) also put up a career-high with 10 points. Ouwinga also contributed with 10 points on 5-8 shooting.

Calvin returns to action this Saturday at the Fieldhouse when it hosts Olivet in MIAA action slated to start at 3 pm.
