CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 25, 2004
KRISTIN MCDONALD NAMED MIAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the second time this month and for the second time in her career, Calvin
junior Kristin McDonald has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women's
basketball.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids West Catholic High
School, McDonald helped Calvin move into a share of first place in the MIAA
standings with conference victories over Albion and Hope last week.
In a 59-50 victory over Albion Tuesday night, McDonald scored 16 points and
dished out four assists. The Calvin victory was its first over Albion since
the 2001-2002 season and snapped a four-game losing streak against the Britons.
On Saturday night, Calvin snapped an even longer losing skid as the Knights
upset nationally-ranked Hope 74-62, breaking a nine-game losing streak against
the Flying Dutch dating back to the 1999-2000 season. McDonald was the
catalyst for the Calvin win, pouring in 25 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the
floor including 5 of 10 from three-point range. The victory over Hope was
Calvin's 11th-straight win.
On the week, McDonald was 14 of 28 from the floor including 8 of 17 from
three-point range and 5 of 7 at the free throw line. She was also credited
with six assists, three steals and three rebounds.
In league games, McDonald is currently second in the MIAA scoring race with an
average of 16.6 points a game, trailing only former West Catholic High School
teammate Karen Hall who is currently a senior at Alma College. McDonald is
also seventh in the MIAA in field goal percentage (.506) and free throw
percentage (.783), fifth in assists-per-game (3.38), number-one in three-point
field goals made (25) and second in three-point field goal percentage (.532).
Calvin is now 13-3 overall and tied with Hope for first place in the MIAA
standings with a 7-1 conference record. The Knights host Alma Tuesday night at
7:30 p.m. with a RealAudio broadcast of the game set for 7:20 on the Calvin web
