CALVIN SPORTS REPORT for Wednesday, January 14, 2004
MEN'S BASKETBALL
This time there are no Knight-mares for the Knights of Calvin College.
Calvin (8-6, 2-1 MIAA) snapped a losing streak of three years at the Anderson
Athletic Center with a 78-62 victory over Kalamazoo (5-9, 1-2 MIAA).
The Knights came out slow after an hour-long delay due to the weather and a
lack of officials. Kalamazoo took an early 7-2 lead before the Knights rattled
off eight straight points to take a 10-7 lead.
The wanted to focus on coming out of the locker room strong and that is
exactly what they did. Extending their lead to 21 nearly half-way through the
second half, the Knights were able to put it on cruise control to finish with
the 16-point victory.
Junior Dan Aultman (Mason County Central) scored a career high 27 points on
11-14 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior tri-captain Chris Prins
(Escondido Calvin Christian) added 21 points and five boards. Calvin's defense
was led by senior tri-captain Ryan Smalligan (East Grand Rapids) who grabbed
ten rebounds and had three blocks. Calvin shot 48.5 percent from the field,
but only 20 percent from three-point range. The Knights won the battle on the
boards 45-31, only the fifth time this season Calvin has outrebounded their
opponent.
Calvin will host MIAA leading Olivet this Saturday, starting at 3:00 p.m.
