WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Kalamazoo * Calvin's Lady Knights (10-3, 4-1 MIAA) used a 68-45 victory over Kalamazoo College (8-6, 2-3 MIAA) to strengthen their hold of second place in the MIAA. The Knights had not won at the Anderson Athletic Complex since the 1999-2000 season, but used the win the push their current streak to eight straight wins.
The Hornets scored the first four points of the game and held the four point spread until a 10-6 score. The Knights then went on a 9-1 run to give themselves a four point lead of their own at 15-11. The Knights finished the first-half strong on a 9-3 run to give them a 32-23 lead going into the locker room. Junior Kristen McDonald (Grand Rapids West Catholic) led the Knights in first-half scoring with six points.
Calvin scorched out of the break to quickly extend the lead to fifteen at 40-25. McDonald scored ten straight points for Calvin on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 56-33. The Knights would play even basketball with the Hornets through the rest of the match.
Kristen McDonald led all scorers with 23 points. Junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian) grabbed seven rebounds and Senior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) and McDonald dished five assists each.
The Knights shot a sizzling 59.5 percent from the floor, 5-5 from the three-point line, and 13-16 from the charity stripe. Calvin also won the rebounding battle 35-23.
Calvin will take a week off before their next match, that coming next Saturday, January 17, at Olivet. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
