CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2003

MEN'S BASKETBALL

CLAREMONT, CA - Calvin used suffocating defensive pressure to roll to a 71-40
victory at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College Tuesday evening as the Knights evened
their record at 5-5 while concluding their trip through Southern California at
1-1.

Wins have been few and far between for Calvin in the state of California as
the Knights had won just five of their previous 21 games in the Golden Gate
state but on Tuesday night, they made no mistake in limiting the host Stags
(4-5) to just 22.8 percent field goal shooting overall.

In the first half, Calvin held Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to just 11 points and
10.7 percent field goal shooting as the Knights raced out to a 34-11 first half
lead. Calvin opened the game with a 16-3 scoring run with senior center Ryan
Smalligan (East Grand Rapids HS) highlighting the surge with a fast-break dunk.
Sophomores Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) and Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) also
connected on three-point field goals in the spurt.

Calvin (5-5) stretched its lead to 30 points at 46-16 on a fast-break layup by
Draayer at the 15:30 mark of the second half to give the Knights their biggest
lead of the game. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps would later cut the gap to 23 points
but would get no closer as Calvin outscored the Stags 14-6 over the final 3:30
of regulation to provide the final margin of victory.

Senior Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) led the Knights with 16 points that
included a pair of three-pointers. His point total allowed him to move past
Kim Campbell and Jim Timmer Jr. and into 12th place on the all-time Calvin
scoring list as he boosted his career total to 1,105 points. Prins is now just
17 points away from moving past Dan Davis and into 11th place on the all-time
list. Junior Dan Aultman (Mason Country Central HS) was also in double-figures
for the Knights with 10 points as he extended his double-figure scoring streak
to 10 games.

Chipping in with nine points apiece for the Knights were junior Ricky Shilts
(Kalamazoo Central HS) and sophomore Brian Roelofs (Haverford, PA) with Roelofs
notching a career scoring high in the process. Smalligan also picked up a
career rebounding high in the win as he snared a game-high 11 boards.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was led by John Parsons and Forrest Caldwell who
tallied seven points apiece. The Knights also held Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
sophomore center Bryan Jolly to just three points. Jolly entered the game
leading the Stags in scoring at better than 15 points a game.

"We started out the game extremely well," said Calvin coach Kevin Vande
Streek. "We came out with good intensity, particularly on defense. We lost
our focus a few times in the second half but we finished the game strong which
I was pleased to see. The story of the game for us though was our defensive
intensity. We hope to keep that intensity up the rest of the season."

Calvin will now prepare to host non-conference rival Ferris State (3-9)
Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse in a game scheduled to begin at
3:00 p.m.. The Bulldogs are led by former Calvin All-American and two-time
MIAA MVP Bill Sall who graduated from Calvin in 1994 and is now in his second
full year as the head coach of the Ferris State men's basketball team. A
year ago, Ferris State handed Calvin a 92-71 defeat in Big Rapids.
