CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR DECEMBER 1, 2003
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Fans of the Calvin basketball teams will once again be able to get to get two
scoops of Calvin hoops on Tuesday evening as both teams travel down to
non-conference rival Wheaton College of Illinois for a doubleheader. The
Calvin women's team (2-1) will open the opening with a 6:15 p.m (ET) game
against host Wheaton (2-2) with the men's game between Calvin (2-3) and Wheaton
(3-0) to follow. The Wheaton men's basketball team is currently ranked 17th in
the latest D3Hoops.com national poll.
Both games will be broadcast locally by Grand Rapids radio station WFUR 102.9
FM. The WFUR broadcasts can also be heard via RealAudio on the Calvin web site

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The national champion Calvin men's cross country team will be one of the
featured teams in a special one-hour NCAA Championship production December 20
on CBS television. The one-hour program will focus on stories from NCAA II and
NCAA III fall sports teams competing at this year's national tournaments and
championship meets. A crew from CBS sports was present at the NCAA III Cross
Country Championships on November 22 at Hanover College and filmed the national
championship effort by the Calvin men's cross country team while also
interviewing Calvin cross country coaches and runners. The air time for the
December 20 broadcast is tentatively set for 2:30 p.m. (ET).
MEN'S CLUB ICE HOCKEY
A year after finishing third at the national club ice hockey championships, the
Calvin club ice hockey team is off to another sizzling start. Under the
direction of head coach Mike Petrusma, the Calvin club ice hockey team is
currently ranked number-one in the first Division III Central Regional poll of
the year while rival Hope is ranked second. Calvin received a unanimous seven
first place votes in the poll. Traditionally, the top three teams in each
region at the conclusion of the regular season are invited to the national
tournament. The Knights are currently 15-0 on the year and fresh off a weekend
sweep of sister school Redeemer College. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, the
Knights traveled to Ontario and defeated Redeemer 4-2 on Friday and then 12-1
on Saturday. A large crowd of fans for both schools including several Calvin
alumni were present for the weekend games.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they journey to Oakland
University for an 8:30 p.m. game. Calvin's next game with Hope is scheduled
for January 17 at the Edge Ice Arena in Holland at 9:00 p.m..
Leading the Knights in scoring once again is sophomore forward Max Sieplinga of
Grand Rapids Christian High School who has 46 points on the strength of 19
goals and 27 assists. A year ago, Sieplinga was named the Most Valuable Player
of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Conference of which Calvin is a member.
