CALVIN SPECIAL SPORTS REPORT FOR Friday, October 14, 2003
One of the most storied individuals in Calvin athletic history has died.
Longtime Calvin coach and professor Don Vroon passed away early this morning
at the age of 70. A 1956 Calvin graduate, Vroon was the 1956 MIAA MVP in men's
basketball and was a starter on three MIAA Championship men's basketball teams
at Calvin. As a student, he was also a member of the Calvin baseball team and
was honored with Calvin's Bere' Memorial Award as a senior.
After serving a term in the armed forces and obtaining his master's degree,
Vroon returned to Calvin in 1959 to teach and coach and remained in the role
for the next 37 years. During his 37 years at Calvin, Vroon coached baseball,
men's and women's basketball and men's tennis at Calvin over a 32-year span
before retiring in 1998.
Visitation for the Vroon family will be held Sunday night at the Zaagman
Funeral home in Grand Rapids from 7-9 p.m. with a memorial service scheduled
for Monday at noon in the Calvin Chapel with lunch to follow the service.
A full look at Vroon's life at Calvin along with downloadable photos for
interested media members can be found on the Calvin web site at:

A on-line memories form for friends of the Vroon family is also listed on the
