Rebekah Weima Named NCAA III Swimmer of the Week
Although Rebekah Weima's collegiate swimming career is just a few weeks old,
she has already begun to collect national honors.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Weima has been named NCAA III Women's Swimmer of the Week by
CollegeSwimming.com.
In a dual meet against national power Wheaton College (IL) this past Saturday,
Weima won two events and was part of a winning relay as the Knights were
defeated 128-109. Weima captured the 100 freestyle with an NCAA III B' Cut
qualifying time of 52.53 which currently ranks as the fastest time in NCAA III
women's swimming this year. Weima also captured the 200 freestyle with an
NCAA III automatic qualifying and school record time of 1:53.55 that shattered
the previous school record of 1:53.73 set by current Calvin assistant coach
Katie Nagelkirk last year. Weima's 200 freestyle time also ranks as the
fastest time in NCAA III women's swimming this year.
In addition, she anchored Calvin's 400 freestyle relay to a first place time
of 4:39.77. Weima swam a sizzling 100 freestyle split of 51.90 on the anchor
leg that proved to be the fastest of the meet.
Weima has shattered two Calvin records this year as she also broke the school
mark in the 500 freestyle two weeks ago with a time of 5:13.93.
The Calvin women's swimming and diving team is currently 2-1 in dual meet
competition this year. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they
compete at a quadrangular hosted by the University of Michigan that will also
included Division III teams from Case Western Reserve, Denison and Kalamazoo.
CALVIN CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PREPARE FOR NCAA III GREAT LAKES REGIONALS
SATURDAY
The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams will head to the NCAA III
Great Lakes Regionals Saturday to be hosted by Hanover College in Hanover,
Indiana.
The top two finishing teams in the men's race and in the women's race will
qualify for the NCAA III Championships November 22. The national meet will
also be hosted by Hanover College.
In addition to the two men's teams and two women's teams, five additional
runners in the men's race and six additional runners from the women's race
will qualify for the national meet in Saturday's regional competition.
In the latest NCAA III poll, the Calvin men are ranked second behind
Wisconsin-Oshkosh. For the second straight week, Calvin again received three
first place votes with Oshkosh claiming five. The Calvin women are ranked
seventh in the women's poll for the second straight week.
Saturday's regional competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. (ET). A RealAudio
