    MEN'S SOCCER

For the first time since 1999, Calvin has claimed an MIAA men's soccer title. The Knights gained a share of the final league crown with a 2-0 victory over visiting Alma Saturday afternoon while Hope battled Albion to a 1-1 overtime tie. Calvin (10-2-0 MIAA) and Hope (9-1-2 MIAA) share the final MIAA crown with 20 points each but Hope gains the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament due to a tie-breaker edge over the Knights.

Ranked 15th nationally heading into the week, Calvin (15-5-0 overall) still has hopes for one of the scarce at-large bids to next week's NCAA III Tournament but must wait until Sunday night when the NCAA III Tournament field is announced.

Calvin's MIAA men's soccer title is the 16th in school history. Calvin has won more MIAA men's soccer titles than any school in league history. Kalamazoo is second with 13 league crowns to its credit.

Calvin scored a goal in each half in its victory over Alma Saturday. Sophomore Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) put the Knights on the board with a goal in the fifth minute of play with freshman Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) drawing an assist on the play. The same combo then hooked up the in second half with Wright converting a feed from Cosnek in the 53rd minute of play.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin's MIAA and NCAA III Tournament hopes were dashed on Saturday with a 4-4 double-overtime tie against visiting St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. The tie allowed Hope to move one point ahead of Calvin in the final league standings, allowing the Flying Dutch to capture their first-ever MIAA title and NCAA III Tournament bid.

St. Mary's (11-4-3 overall, 6-4-4 MIAA) stunned Calvin (12-5-2 overall, 10-2-2 MIAA) by scoring three goals in the opening 21 minutes. Colleen Courtney scored two of the goals for the Belles and assisted on another, giving St. Mary's what appeared to be an insurmountable 3-0 lead midway through the first half.

Calvin battled back however and picked up its first goal of the afternoon with just 2:45 left in the first half as sophomore Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) whipped in a rebound shot originally struck by freshman Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS). The Knights then received a huge break just over a minute later as a long chip by Calvin sophomore Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) was misplayed by the St. Mary's goalkeeper and flew into the top half of the net, closing the gap to 3-2 shortly before halftime.

In the 59th minute of the match, Weesies broke free up the middle on a well-placed chip by Berghuis and slipped a low hard shot into the net to tie the score at three. Calvin continued to press offensively but it was St. Mary's that scored next as a high lofting shot by junior Jen Concannon slid through the outstretched arms of Calvin freshman goalkeeper Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS) with just 19:15 left in regulation. Less than a minute later, Weesies broke free up the left wing and slammed a shot that was momentarily stopped by the St. Mary's goalkeeper but then rolled over her body and into the far corner of the net to tie the score at 4-4.

Calvin would outshoot St. Mary's 8-3 the rest of the way but neither team would score again. The Knights had a pair of glorious scoring opportunities in both overtimes sessions. Minutes into the first overtime, the Knights had a chance to slam a loose ball home after the goalkeeper had over run the ball but could not convert. The Knights then came close in the opening minute of the second overtime but shots by freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) and Weesies were saved. With 20 seconds left to play, the Knights came up with one final chance but a full-volley attempt by senior Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) on a wide-open net was off the mark.

Calvin finished with a 24-16 shots at goal advantage with Campbell collecting five saves in net for the Knights.

In scoring two goals and picking up one assist, Weesies finished as the MIAA's individual scoring champion with 45 points, marking the fifth time a Calvin player has accomplished the feat. Calvin's sister tandem of Tara (1995 and 1997) and Tricia (2001 and 2002) Dyk have combined for the other four scoring crowns from Calvin. With 14 assists on the season, Weesies matches the Calvin single-season record also held by Tracy Veurink (1990) and Larissa Onderlinde (2001). Her total of 13 assists in league play also matches the fourth-best single-season total in MIAA history.

Calvin has now finished as league runner-up three times in the last five years. Calvin's last MIAA title was in 1997.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

WHEATON, IL * Just three weeks into the season, Calvin freshman Rebekah Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) has already shattered a pair of school records. A week ago, Weima shattered the school mark in the 500 freestyle. On Saturday in a dual meet at national power Wheaton (IL), Weima shattered Calvin's school record in the 200 freestyle with an NCAA III B' cut time of 1:53.55. Her first place time shattered the previous school record of 1:53.73 set by current Calvin assistant coach Katie Nagelkirk last year. Weima also continued on to win the 100 freestyle with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 52.53, just three-tenths of a second of Calvin's school record.

The seventh place finisher at last year's NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, Wheaton continued on to defeat Calvin 128-109 in Saturday's non-conference dual meet.

In the men's competition, Wheaton defeated Calvin 132-103. The Wheaton men took seventh at the 2003 NCAA III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Weima's performances were part of three NCAA III B' cut qualifying times for the Calvin women on Saturday as sophomore Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) accomplished the feat in winning the 400 IM in 4:43.92. Johnson also took second in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:13.71. Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Elizabeth Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL), Johnson, senior Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) and Weima also took first place in a time of 3:39.77.

In the men's competition, senior Brad White (Traverse City) took first place in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:45.92 while also taking second in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 48.21. Sophomore Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) had a big afternoon as he was the only double-winner for the Knights in taking first place in the 500 freestyle (5:04.19) and 1,000 freestyle (10:36.54). Both times were season-best performances. Junior Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) also captured the 200 butterfly (1:59.67) in a season-best time while swimming just a few miles from his hometown.

Both Calvin teams will now prepare for a large invitational that will be held at the University of Michigan next Saturday and include teams from Denison, Kalamazoo and Case Western Reserve.
