WOMEN'S SOCCER
ADRIAN - For the first time this season the Calvin women's soccer team is
above the .500 mark, following a 7-0 thrashing of Adrian College on the road.
The Knights are riding a four game win streak and have upped their record to
5-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the MIAA.
The powerful 1-2 combination of freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian) and
fellow classmate Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian) has been the catalyst for
the Knights offensively. Capel earned her first career hat-trick, notching
three goals and an assist. Capel now has 10 goals and five assists for 25
points on the season. Weesies scored two goals and added two assists, upping
her team-leading totals in goals, assists, and points. She now has 11 goals,
eight assists, and 30 points. Freshman Jennifer Evans (Derry, PA/Derry Area)
scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute, her sixth of the season.
Also chipping in with a goal was Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian), while Leah
Scholten (Unity Christian), and Erin Sargent (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills
Central) each added an assist.
Collecting her second collegiate shutout in goal was freshman Lisa Campbell
(Gull Lake) who collected five saves.
The Knights will take their win-streak into a bout with undefeated Hope
College on Saturday, October 11. The Dutch enter the game 10-0-1 overall and
7-0-0 in the MIAA, having only given up three goals all season. The game will
be broadcast live via RealAudio, compliments of the Calvin Sports Information
Office. The game is set to start at noon, pre-game to start at 11:55 a.m. You

VOLLEYBALL
NOTRE DAME, IN - Calvin notched another win in conference action Tuesday
evening, knocking off St. Mary's in five games 30-28, 28-30, 30-25, 21-30,
15-13. The Knights improve to 16-5 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA, remaining tied
with Hope atop the conference, with Alma just a game back in the win column.
Calvin was led by junior middle-hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) who
notched 25 kills and five blocks. Freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe
Falls) added 21 kills and seven digs while sophomore Katie Schultz (Escondido,
CA/Escondido Calvin Christian) chipped in 13 kills and 22 digs. Senior Trisha
Balkema (Illiana Christian) led the Knights defensively with 30 digs and
sophomore setter Jill Scholten (Holland Christian) dished out 57 assists.
Calvin will now rest until October 16 when it travels to Hope in a game with
league-title implications. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. from the
Hope College Dow Center.
