Calvin 22nd in Final NACDA Director's Cup Standings

A remarkable streak has continued at Calvin College.

For the eighth consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top-25 finish in the final NCAA III NACDA Director's Cup standings. In the final 2002/2003 standings, Calvin has finished 22nd with 403.75 points.

Calvin is now one of only nine schools to finish in the top-25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.

Joining Calvin in the group are Williams (MA), College of New Jersey, Amherst (MA), Middlebury (VT), Ithaca (NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland and Emory (Ga.).

The NACDA Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The NACDA Director's Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90 points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.

Williams of Massachusetts, captured the Director's Cup for the seventh straight year, finishing with a commanding first place total of 1,158.25 points while Emory University placed second with 779 points.

The final standings include the spring sports of baseball, men's golf, men's and women's tennis, softball, and men's and women's outdoor track and field. This spring, Calvin's track and field teams added 133.25 points to the final point total of Calvin's athletic program. The women's track and field team earned 72.5 points with a sixth place finish at the NCAA III Championships while the men's track and field team recorded 61.5 points with a 13th place finish at the national meet.

During the fall the Calvin men's cross country team earned its second straight national runner-up berth, earning Calvin 90 points. The Calvin women's cross country team finished fifth at the recent NCAA III Championships to earn 75 points. Calvin then scored in men's and women's swimming and diving this during the winter sports season. The Calvin women's swimming and diving team took 34th at the NCAA III Championships to earn 40 points while the Calvin men's swimming and diving team took 12th to earn 64.5 points.

Last year, Calvin finished 11th in the final NACDA Director's Cup standings with 490 points * its fourth-highest finish ever.

This is the eighth year for the NACDA Director's Cup chase at the NCAA III level. Calvin finished 9th during the 2000-2001 season with 474 points; 6th during the 1999-2000 season with 561 points; 7th during the 1998-99 season with 350 points; 25th during the 1997-98 season with 200 points; 22nd for the 1996-97 season with 321.5 points and 11th during the 1995-96 campaign with 425 points.
