Calvin Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Programs
Land Four on Verizon Academic All-District IV Teams
Four members of the Calvin men's cross country and track and field teams have been named to Verizon Academic All-District IV teams in the cross country/track and field college division.
Named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV first team is senior Joel Klooster and junior Tim Avery. Senior Brian Paff and junior Hendrik Kok have been named to the second team. As members of the first team, Klooster and Avery now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Verizon Academic All-America consideration.
The college division of the Verizon Academic All-America program includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Verizon Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20.
Klooster is a native of Chatham, Ontario. He is a graduate of Chatham Christian High School. This past weekend at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships, Klooster captured All-America accolades for the fourth time in his track and field career and for the sixth time in his collegiate running career as he took eighth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:52.83. Klooster recently graduated from Calvin with a degree in electrical engineering and a cumulative grade point average of 3.98. He was recently named the recipient of Calvin's Bere' Memorial Award, given to the top senior male student-athlete. Klooster is also a three-time Verizon Academic All-American and was voted the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year in the cross country/track and field college division last spring.
Avery hails from Rochester, New York. He is a graduate of Gates-Chili High School. A year ago, Avery was named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV second team. Avery is a two-time first team All-MIAA selection in cross country and was a member of the All-MIAA track and field team this spring. Also a two-time Great Lakes All-Region honoree in cross country, Avery placed 60th at the 2002 NCAA III Cross Country Championships, helping Calvin finish second as a team. This spring, Avery was a provisional qualifier for the 2002 NCAA III Track and Field Championships in the 5,000 meters, an event that he placed second in at the 2002 MIAA Track and Field Championships. An Education major with an emphasis in art, Avery holds a 3.84 grade point average. He has been three-time Cross Country Coaches All-Academic selection and a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Kok hails from Lynden, Washington, and is a graduate of Lynden Christian High School. This past weekend at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships, Kok took fifth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:31 to net the third All-America certificate of his Calvin track and field career and the fourth of his collegiate running career. At the 2002 NCAA III Track and Field Championships, Kok placed sixth in the 1,500 meters and third in the 5,000 meters to help Calvin finish second as a team. Kok then played a key role in Calvin's national runner-up finish in cross country this past fall as he came up with an All-America finish at the national meet, placing ninth individually with a time of 25:30. At the MIAA Track and Field Championships this spring, Kok repeated as league champion in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:55.45. Kok was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner in cross country this fall and earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team. He also landed a spot on the All-M!
IAA track and field team for the second straight year this spring. Kok is a Biology major at Calvin and carries a 3.51 grade point average. He plans to attend medical school after graduating from Calvin and currently serves as a student assistant in the Calvin Admissions Office.
Paff is from the San Diego suburb of National City, California. He is a graduate of Bonita Vista High School. This past fall, Paff earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team and Great Lakes All-Region team in cross country after placing seventh at the MIAA Championships and 14th at the NCAA III Great Lakes Regional meet. At the 2002 NCAA III Cross Country Championships, he was Calvin's sixth finisher as he placed 78th with a time of 26:14. At the 2002 MIAA Track and Field Championships, Paff placed fifth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 32:25, helping Calvin claim its 10th straight league title. Paff is a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and was a member of the NCAA III College Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team this past fall. Paff is an Elementary Education major with an emphasis in English. He will return for a final season of cross country eligibility next fall.

Four Calvin athletes have been named to Verizon Academic All-District IV teams in the women's cross country/track and field college division. Named to the first team is Calvin sophomore Laura Hamilton. Named to the second team from Calvin are seniors Annie VanderLaan and Mandy VanDenBosch and junior Jessie Lair.
As a member of the first team, Hamilton now advances to the national ballot and is eligible for Verizon Academic All-America consideration.
Hamilton hails from Downers Grove, Illinois, and is a graduate of Timothy Christian High School. This past weekend at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Hamilton was a part of an All-America relay for the second straight year as she led of Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team that finished sixth. Individually, Hamilton just missed an All-America berth as she placed ninth in the 400 meter hurdles. Hamilton advanced to the finals of the 400 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 1:01.77, becoming just the third individual in Calvin women's track and field history to run a sub-62 second quarter in the hurdles.
At the 2002 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Hamilton ran the anchor leg of Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that earned All-America honors with a fourth place finish. Earlier this spring, Hamilton repeated as MIAA champion in the 400 meter hurdles and ran legs on Calvin's MIAA champion 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams as the Knights captured their 14th straight league title. Hamilton is majoring in chemical engineering and carries a 3.94 grade point average. She was a member of the 2002 MIAA Academic Honor Roll and has been a regular member of the Calvin Dean's List.
VanderLaan is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. At the NCAA III Track and Field Championships last weekend, she captured the national title in the heptathlon with a school record total of 4,852 points. She also placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and ran the anchor leg on Calvin's All-America 4x100 meter relay team. Over the course of her collegiate track and field career, VanderLaan posted six All-America performances including three in the heptathlon. At the MIAA Track and Field Championships earlier this month, she captured the league title in the 100 meter hurdles for the fourth straight year and was a member of Calvin's MIAA championship 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams. VanderLaan is the Calvin and MIAA record holder in the 100 meter hurdles. She has also been voted to the All-MIAA women's track and field team four times and was the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner twice. VanderLaan was graduated from Calvin with a major in phy!
sical education. She carried a 3.45 grade point average and was a recipient of the 2002 USTCA All-Academic Award. She was recently named the recipient of Calvin's 2003 Kay Tiemersma Award, given to the top senior female student-athlete.
VanDenBosch is also from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A two-time All-MIAA honoree in track and field, VanDenBosch took 10th in the shot put at the NCAA III Championships last week. During the year, she shattered the Calvin record in the shot put with a mark of 44-9 � and repeated as league champion in the event at the MIAA Championships while also placing second in the discus. An elementary education major, VanDenBosch carries a 3.74 grade point average. She will return to Calvin in the fall to complete her student teaching assignment.
Lair is from West Bloomfield and is a graduate of Southfield Christian High School. An education major with an emphasis in art, Lair carries a 3.76 grade point average. At the NCAA III Track and Field Championships last weekend, Lair took 15th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:57. At the 2002 NCAA III Cross Country Championships, she earned All-America honors for the first time in her career as she took 13th individually with a time of 22:00, helping Calvin finish fifth as a team. At the 2001 NCAA III Cross Country Championships, she placed 57th. She also qualified for the 2001 NCAA III Track and Field Championships in the 10,000 meters and for the 2002 national meet in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Lair is the Calvin record holder in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:01.
