MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL * Calvin sophomore Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) continued her record-breaking track and field season Friday night at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College.
In the 100 meters, Abbring shattered her own school record of 12.23 with a second place and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 12.12. Defending NCAA III champion Muffy Israel of Carthage College edged Abbring with a first place time of 12.06.
Abbring then took second place in the 200 meters with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 24.57, just five-hundreths of a second off her school record time of 24.52 established last week at the MIAA Championships.
Junior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) also had a record-setting evening for the Knights as she took first place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a school record and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 10:54.89, shattering her own school record of 11:08.46 established earlier this spring. The time by Hastings is the third-fastest in NCAA III women's track and field this spring. Also clocking an NCAA III provisional qualifying time for Calvin in the steeplechase was senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) who took third in 11:19.71.
Senior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also shattered her own school record Friday night as she took second place in the 100 meter hurdles with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14.57, shattering her previous school mark of 14.71 set earlier this year. The time is also the fifth-fastest time in NCAA III women's track and field this spring.
In the 4 x 400 meter relay, VanderLaan teamed up with Abbring, sophomore Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) and junior Shawna Anderson (Bismark, ND) to take third with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 3:50.43 that is the sixth-fastest in NCAA III women's track and field this year. In the 400 meter hurdles, Hamilton took second with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:03.28.
Freshman Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also came up with a season-best and career-best performance in the 800 meters, taking third with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 2:15.06. In the pole vault, Calvin freshman Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) came up with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying vault of 11-9 ¾ to take second place in the event. The vault is the sixth-best in NCAA III women's track and field this spring.
Also taking first place for the Calvin women on Friday were junior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) in the discus (147-2) while senior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in the shot put (41-3 ¼).
In the men's competition, Calvin received strong performances in the distance events. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Andy Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) took second with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 9:11.28. In the 5,000 meters, Calvin junior Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) took first with an NCAA III automatic qualifying and season-best time of 14:26.74. Calvin also received NCAA III provisional qualifying performances from senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON) and junior Dave Haagsma (South Christian HS) as Klooster took 13th (14:43.79) and Haagsma took 15th (14:46.67).
In the 800 meters, Calvin senior Joel Post (DeMotte, IN) took 19th with a career-best time of 1:55.24. Senior Nick VanderPlas (McBain Christian HS) also took third in the shot put with an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 51-5 ½.
The Calvin track and field teams return to action next week when a group of Calvin athletes compete at the Baldwin-Wallace Twilight Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
