CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2003
BASEBALL
Calvin slipped to 6-23 on the year as it dropped its 12th straight game with a
4-2 defeat at non-conference foe Saginaw Valley State Thursday afternoon in a
game shortened to six innings because of weather conditions.
Calvin matched Saginaw Valley State (27-13) in hits with eight on the afternoon
but the Knight comitted five errors while the Cardinals had none.
Saginaw Valley State took a 1-0 lead on a run in the first, using a pair of
two-out singles and a pair of stolen bases to score first.
Calvin came back with a run in the second as senior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek,
CA) drove in his team-leading 29th run of the season with a double to right
field that scored junior Terry O'Neal (Muskegon-Reeths Puffer HS) who had
earlier reached base on a lead-off single. The Cardinals retook the look with
an unearned run in the bottom of the third and added two more runs in the
fourth, using two hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly to build a 4-1 lead.
In the fifth, sophomore Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) reached base on a one-out
single and scored on a double to right-center field by freshman Tyler VanEps
(Denver, CO) to the cut the Saginaw Valley lead in half.
Calvin would not score again however as the game was halted due to weather
conditions upon completion of the sixth inning.
Vriesman and Eppinga led the Knights at the plate with two hits apiece.
Sophomore Andy Bunting (Maple City Glen Lake HS) got the start and took the
loss to fall to 0-2 on the year. Freshmen Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS)
and Chris Hinkley (Monmouth, ME) also saw time on the hill for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens up a three-game conference
series at home against Adrian at 4:00 p.m.
