CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 1, 2003
BASEBALL
Calvin dropped a 7-3 non-conference decision to GLIAC foe Grand Valley State
University Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. The Knights dip to 5-9 with the
defeat.
Calvin outhit the visiting Lakers 10-8 but had a handful of scoring
opportunities erased by three double plays turned by the Grand Valley defense.
After both teams scored a run in the first, Calvin jumped out to a 3-1 lead
with a pair of runs in the second on the strength of four hits and one Laker
error. Freshman Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) drove in one run
on a groundout and junior Terry O'Neal brought home Calvin's second run of
the inning with an RBI single.
Grand Valley (17-5) came back with two runs in the top of the third with
junior Joe Brunink stroking his second home run of the year for the Lakers in
the inning.
Grand Valley added single runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth to
provide a four-run cushion.
Freshman Chris Hinkley (Monmouth, ME) went the first three innings for Calvin
with freshmen Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS), Kory Ciecielski (Petoskey
HS) and Ryan Smith (Madison, AL) coming on in relief. Buikema (0-2) took the
loss, despite allowing only one earned run in three innings of work.
Four of Grand Valley's runs were unearned on the afternoon as the Knights
committed three errors.
O'Neal and freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) collected two hits apiece for
Calvin in defeat.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens up a three-game weekend
series at rival Hope at the Buys Athletic Complex. Friday's nine-inning game
is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. with a Saturday doubleheader on tap for a
1:00 p.m. start.
