CALVIN SPORTS REPORT EXTRA FOR MARCH 29, 2003
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
In yesterday's Calvin sports report, it was noted that Calvin junior Katie
Corner shattered the school record in the shot put with an NCAA III provisional
qualifying mark of 43-3 at the Grand Rapids Invitational. What was missing
from the report was that Corner not only shattered the Calvin shot put record,
but also shattered the Calvin record in the hammer throw as she took fourth in
the event with a mark of 140-10. Corner's throw in the hammer shattered the
previous school record of 137-7 set by current Calvin junior Carrie Zatarga
last spring.
Corner now holds Calvin records in the shot put (43-3), hammer throw (140-10)
and discus (154-0). A graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School,
Corner was an All-America in the discus last year as she took fifth in the
event at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She is the only
discus All-American in Calvin women's track and field history.
