CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (Part Two) FOR MARCH 28, 2003
SOFTBALL
Calvin 12, Franklin 0
TERRA HAUTE, IN * Behind a combined shutout from freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern) and sophomore Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) and an explosive offensive attack the Knights rolled to a 12-0 win over Franklin College Friday afternoon at the Rose-Hulman Softball Invitational. The win, which improves Calvin's record to 9-4 for the spring, was its third of the week as the Knights achieved splits with Saginaw Valley and Aquinas earlier in the week. The Knights are participating in the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Softball Invitational, upcoming games include Rose-Hulman (2) and Thomas More College.
J. Cole went three innings and gave up four hits while walking none and striking out three. After taking a hot shot off her hand in the fourth inning, she moved over to shortstop and Heyboer took over on the mound. Heyboer gave up only two hits over the next four innings, earning the win, while walking one and striking out five.
Offensively, Calvin was led by third-baseman Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) and Heyboer as each collected three hits apiece. Balkema had a pair of doubles, going 3-3 from the plate as she amassed four RBI's. Previously, Heyboer had only one hit in eight at-bats as she garnered a 3-3 performance from the plate. J. Cole collected two hits and scored four runs.
