Women's Basketball Coach Resigns
GRAND RAPIDS - Dr. Kim Gall is stepping down from her position as women's
basketball coach at Calvin College. A full professor in the Calvin Health,
Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Sport department, Gall will pursue
other teaching duties and responsibilities within the department. Gall's
primary area of teaching is in teacher education.
"I have asked to be reassigned so that I can fulfill other responsibilities
within the department," said Gall. "I will miss coaching basketball but I am
looking forward to exploring new opportunities."
Gall recently completed her fourth year at the helm of the Calvin women's
basketball program and her 18th overall at the collegiate level. In her four
years as Calvin women's basketball coach, Gall compiled a 63-43 (.594) record
that included an MIAA Tournament championship in 2000 and a berth in the NCAA
III Tournament. Under her direction, Calvin reached the "Sweet 16" round of
the 2000 NCAA III Tournament with victories over Lake Forest College (IL) and
Capital University. Calvin's tournament run concluded with a double-overtime
loss to Baldwin-Wallace in the sectional semifinals. Gall also served as
women's tennis coach at Calvin for three years, leading the Knights to a 15-4
record and fourth place finish in the MIAA in 1998, an 11-6 mark and third
place MIAA finish in 1999 and a 16-4 record and second place MIAA finish in
2000.
"We appreciate all that Kim has given our women's basketball and tennis
programs," said Calvin women's athletic director Dr. Nancy Meyer. "We are
thankful that she will continue to contribute to our department as she begins a
new point in her professional career."
A search for a new women's basketball coach at Calvin will begin immediately
according to Meyer.
Gall came to Calvin in 1997 after completing her Ph.D requirements at The Ohio
State University. Prior to coaching at Calvin, Gall was the women's basketball
coach for 14 years at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. In 18 years
of coaching women's collegiate basketball, Gall recorded an overall won-loss
record of 224-227 (.497). She taught and coached at Geneva from 1980-1994,
also serving as head coach of the women's tennis team for 14 years. She was
also an instructor in physical education all 14 years and was women's athletic
director for 13 of her 14 years at Geneva.
A native of Britton, Michigan, Gall attended Britton-Macon Area High School.
She graduated from Cedarville College (OH) in 1978. At Cedarville, Gall was a
four-year member of the women's basketball and softball teams and played two
years on the women's field hockey team and one year on the women's volleyball
team. As a senior in 1978, she was voted the Cedarville female Athlete of the
Year by the Cedarville coaching staff. She earned a master's degree in
physical education from Dayton University in 1980.
