GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin men's and women's track and field coach Dr. Jong-Il
Kim has been named to the Detroit Free Press 2002 Michigan's Best list of sports
    figures.

Kim is one of 23 individuals listed by the Detroit Free Press in its January 11
edition which can be found on-line at:
http://www.freep.com/pdf/2003/01/11/michigans_best.pdf. Kim is one of eight
individuals from West Michigan on the list including three from the MIAA. Other
West Michigan individuals on the list include Mark Catlin of Lowell High School,
Curt Anes, David Kircus and Brian Kelly of Grand Valley State University,
Anthony Holt of Kalamazoo College, Josh Boss of Hope College and Carla Fles of
    Cornerstone University.

Other notable names on the list include Scotty Bowman and Niklas Lidstrom of
the Detroit Red Wings and Ben Wallace and Rick Carlisle of the Detroit Pistons.

Readers are invited to submit ballots for who they believe is Michigan's top
sports figure from last Saturday's edition. The deadline for voting is this
    Friday.

This past spring, Kim was named NCAA Division III women's Coach of the Year by
the United States Track and Field Coaches Association while also receiving Great
Lakes Regional Coach of the Year honors for men's and women's track and field
from the USTCA. At the NCAA III Championships, Kim took the Calvin women's
track and field team to a 12th place national finish and the Calvin men's track
and field team to a national runner-up finish. It was the men's highest finish
ever. Collectively, the Calvin men's track and field team produced nine
All-America performances while the women's team had five.

In addition, Calvin captured both the men's and women's MIAA titles with both
teams going unbeaten in MIAA dual meets. At the MIAA Championships, the two
Calvin teams combined to break 11 school and three conference records.

A native of Cheong-Ju, South Korea, Kim competed for the South Korean national
track and field team from 1979-1990 and became the first athlete from his
country to reach the finals of an Olympic track and field event when he placed
eighth in the long jump at the '84 Games in Los Angeles.

Kim is the seventh individual in Calvin athletic history to receive national
coach of the year honors including the fifth in the last four years.
