CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR November 22, 2002
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin Tip-Off Tournament will feature a meeting of nationally-ranked teams
in its championship game Saturday as Brockport State (NY) and Calvin advanced to
Saturday's championship tilt with lopsided victories first round victories
Friday night.
Ranked 16th in the D3hoops.com national poll, Brockport State rolled to an
80-58 win over Dominican University (IL) as Kellan Skrine led the Golden Eagles
with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Ranked 15th in the D3hoops.com national poll, Calvin breezed to a 96-67 win
over Grace Bible College behind a 20-point effort from junior forward Chris
Prins (Escondido, CA).
Saturday night's meeting between Calvin and Brockport State will feature the
first-ever meeting between the two schools. A year ago, Brockport State reached
the NCAA III Quarterfinals and posted a 28-3 overall record.
In its victory over Grace Bible College, Calvin raced out to a 59-37 halftime
lead and never looked back. Calvin is now 5-2 in season openers under head
coach Kevin Vande Streek.
Calvin shot 54.1 percent overall including 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from
three-point range. In addition to the 20 points from Prins, Calvin received 12
points apiece from junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman
Jeremy Burgin (Chisago Lakes, MN). Burgin was making his collegiate debut
Friday night and he made his debut one to remember as he connected on four
three-point field goals.
Seniors Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian HS), Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity
Christian HS) and junior Mike Natelborg (Highland, IN) added nine points apiece.
Calvin also held a 39-30 rebounding edge with Prins, Veenstra and Dykstra
grabbing six boards apiece.
Cory Nederveld led Grace Bible with 16 points and six rebounds.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin opened its season with a 75-58 victory over Point Park College (PA)
Friday night in the first round of the Carnegie Mellon Tipoff Tournament in
Pittsburg, PA. Calvin will face host Carnegie Mellon in the championship game
Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Carnegie Mellon defeated Denison 70-61 in the other first
round game on Friday.
Calvin led 42-20 in its win over Point Park and maintained a healthy lead
throughout the second half. The Knights enjoyed a 49-38 rebounding advantage
with junior center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) leading the way with 11
boards along with six points. Senior forward Emily Beard (Southfield Christian
HS) also collected 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian HS) led all scorers with 15 points as she was
5-for-5 from the field including 2-for-2 from three-point range. Sophomore
center Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also stellar for the
Knights, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds in her varsity debut.
Calvin shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-of-57) including 45.5 percent
(5-of-11) from three-point range. Point Park shot just 32.3 percent from the
field including just 27.6 percent in the first half.
