Calvin dropped a pair of non-conference dual meets to visiting Wheaton Saturday
afternoon at Calvin’s Bergsma Natatorium. In the men’s competition, Wheaton
secured a come-from-behind 113.5-109.5 victory over Calvin with a 1-3 finish in
the final event of the meet – the 400 freestyle relay. A year ago, Wheaton
finished one spot ahead of Calvin at the NCAA III Championships as the Thunder
took eighth with 212 points while Calvin placed ninth with 136.5 points.
In the women’s competition, Wheaton topped Calvin 125-112, taking first place
in eight of a possible 13 events. Wheaton took sixth at the NCAA III
Championships last year with 184 points while Calvin placed 27th with 30
points.
Both Calvin teams are now 1-1 in dual meet competition this year.
In the men’s meet, Calvin and Wheaton exchanged the lead six times with
Wheaton winning the meet with a 1-3 finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
Wheaton’s “A” relay finished a half-second ahead of Calvin’s top
relay of freshman Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) and seniors Ryan Johnson
(Grand Haven HS), Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA) and Jake VanderPlas (Palo Alto, CA)
with a time of 3:17.98 while its “B” relay took third place by a
seven-second margin. Heading into the 400 freestyle relay, Calvin held a
105.5-100.5 point lead.
Calvin took first place in six events with freshman J.D. Schaumberg
(Zionsville, IN) claiming a pair of victories, winning the one-meter (202.4) and
three-meter (212.3) diving competitions. Senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) took first place in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of
1:46.89 and second in the 100 freestyle in 49.19. Sophomore Peter Boumgarden

100 freestyle (49.52). In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Ryan Preston
(Richmond, IN) claimed a thrilling victory with a time of 2:18.52, two-tenths of
a second ahead of a Wheaton competitor who led Preston the entire race until the
final 10 yards. Calvin’s 400 medley relay of VanderPlas, Preston, Boumgarden
and Penninga also pounded out a first place time of 3:37.57.
In the women’s meet, Calvin received a pair of victories from junior Sarah
TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) as she won the one-meter (196.55) and three-meter
(226.95) diving competitions. The Knights also picked up a first place
performance from senior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian HS) in the 50
freestyle with a time of 24.69. Nagelkirk was also second in the 100 freestyle
with a time of 54.45. Freshman Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) took first in the
200 IM with a blazing time of 2:13.93, just a half-second off of the Calvin
record. Johnson also took second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.05.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the Calvin quartet of Nagelkirk, Johnson and
freshman Jen Kool (Holland Christian HS) and Lynn Visser (Jenison HS) took first
place with a time of 3:44.36, edging Wheaton’s top relay by seven hundredths
of a second with Nagelkirk swimming the anchor leg. Senior Anne Kuiper
(Houghton HS) also turned in a notable effort in the 200 breaststroke, taking
second with a time of 2:36.82.
