SPORTS REPORT PART 2 FOR SEPT. 18
MEN'S GOLF
Calvin took third at the second MIAA outing of the year with a team score of
314 strokes Wednesday afternoon. The outing was hosted by Olivet at the Bedford
Valley Country Club. Host Olivet took first place honors with a team score of
290, three strokes ahead of second place Hope.
Calvin finished at the head of a tight pack fighting for places 3-through-6 as
Alma took fourth with a score of 315 followed by Adrian in fifth at 316 and
Albion sixth at 320.
Calvin was led by junior Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) who finished tied for
eighth with a round of 75 while junior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian
High School) was Calvin's second man, finishing tied for 10th with a round of
76. Senior Tony Karsten (Holland Christian) had the third-best score of the
afternoon for Calvin with a round of 78 while senior Mike Sherman (Grand Rapids
Christian) and junior Phil Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist) closed out the
finishing scores for Calvin with rounds of 85. Scott Miller of Olivet received
medalist honors after firing a score of 70.
After two league outings, Calvin stands in fifth place in the overall MIAA
standings. Calvin will now prepare for the third MIAA outing of the year which
will be held on Saturday and hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club.
