CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 31, 2002
VOLLEYBALL
The Calvin volleyball team is off to a good start, a very good start. The
Knights have run off to a 4-0 record, but even more impressive is the fact that
they have yet to lose a game inside those matches. Calvin knocked off Kalamazoo
College (3-1) in the championship game of the Dominos-Radisson Volleyball
Invitational 30-17, 30-28, 30-17. The Knights were led by Cassie Christopher
(Fruitport) who notched 12 kills while fellow senior Melissa Pell (Fremont)
added 11 kills. Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) shelled out 40 assists and
Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) had 15 digs. Both Pell and Tucker were named
to the All-Tournament team.
In the first match of the day Calvin knocked off Manchester in three straight
games 30-27, 30-11, 30-26. A steady Calvin attack was led by Christopher, who
checked in with eight kills and five aces. Kristin DeGroot (Central Valley
Christian) added seven kills while Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon) and Pell
each chipped in six kills apiece. Tucker dished out 29 assists and amassed four
aces. Balkema, playing the role of the libero, picked up 15 digs.
Calvin will return to action September 4 as it kicks off the MIAA portion of
its season, traveling to Alma College for a 6:30 pm match.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin continued its dominance at the Ralph Ketner Classic on Saturday,
bouncing Huntington College (IN) 4-2 in the championship game of the tournament.
After a goal by freshman Levi Kool (Holland Christian) at the 14:12 mark that
tied the game, both teams fell prone to a dry spell that lasted nearly 60
minutes. Sophomore striker Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) ended that
streak, scoring an unassisted goal at the 73:00 mark. Junior Dave DeBoer
(Western Michigan Christian) poured gas on the Calvin offensive fire picking up
a goal just :27 seconds later on a pass from Jamie Bassow (Grand Haven). Blowing
things wide open and scoring his second goal in a four minute span, Veldhouse
notched his third goal of the season; assist to Dave Buursma (Western Michigan
Christian). Huntington (1-1) scored the last goal of the game at the 81:59
mark.
Senior Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) recorded the start in goal and worked the
first 77 minutes, until he was replaced by freshman Joe Westra (Grand Rapids
Christian) who worked the last 13 minutes. Each goalie gave up one goal. Calvin
outshot Huntington 21-11 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Calvin will return to action on September 6, playing host to UW-Oshkosh. Game
time is 4:00 pm.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin endured its first loss of the season to Denison University 2-1, on a
golden goal in the second overtime. The goal which came in the 107th minute of
play by Colleen Wirtz found the net from thirty yards and was credited as an
unassisted goal.
Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) scored the lone goal of the day for
the Knights (0-1) sliding a shot on the ground past the outstretched goalkeeper
with just two minutes left in regulation to send the game to overtime. She was
assisted by freshman Karla Van Beveren (Hamilton District Christian). Calvin was
outshot by Denison 22-5, and Dyk's goal was the only shot on goal in the
second half for the Knights.
Calvin will return to action on September 3 to face Cornerstone University.
That game will take place at Calvin Field at 4:00 PM.
