Calvin Announces Men's/Women's Basketball Schedules

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin athletic department has announced its men's and
women's basketball schedules for the upcoming 2002-2003 season.

The Calvin men's basketball schedule will feature 12 home dates including its
own Calvin Tip-Off Tournament November 22 and 23. The tournament will open
November 22 with Dominican University of Illinois taking on a Brockport State
(NY) team that advanced to the NCAA III National Quarterfinals last spring. The
Dominican/Brockport State contest will begin at 6:00 p.m.. Calvin will then face
Grace Bible College at 8:00 p.m. in the second first round game. The
consolation game is set for 6:00 p.m. on November 23 with the championship
contest to follow at 8:00 p.m..

The Calvin men will then travel to Ferris State University on November 26 to
face a Bulldog team coached by former Calvin All-American Bill Sall. The
contest will be the season debut for Ferris State and will begin at 7:30 p.m..

On November 29 and 30, Calvin will travel to the state of New York to compete
in a rugged Thanksgiving holiday tournament hosted by the University of
Rochester. The host Yellow Jackets reached the NCAA III Final Four last year
for the third time in school history. In both of its prior trips, Rochester was
joined in the Final Four by Calvin with Rochester winning the national
championship in 1990 while Calvin won the national title in 1992 - in fact -
defeating Rochester 62-49 in the national championship game. Ironically, the
opponent that Calvin defeated to win its second national championship -
Wisconsin-Eau Claire - will also compete in the Rochester Tournament. Calvin
defeated UW-Eau Claire 79-74 in the 2000 national championship game. Johns
Hopkins of the Centennial Conference will also compete in the Rochester
Tournament.

The Knights will then return home to host traditional non-conference rival
Wheaton of Illinois December 3. Calvin will travel to future MIAA member
Tri-State (IN) on December 7 and then meet Grace Bible College December 11. On
December 20 and 21, Calvin will participate in a tournament hosted by Muskingum
College of Ohio that will also include Taylor (IN) and Malone (OH).

On New Year's Eve, Calvin will host former MIAA rival Defiance (OH) at 7:30
p.m. and will then travel cross-town for a game at Aquinas January 4. The
four-time defending MIAA champion Knights will open conference play on January 8
when they host Kalamazoo College led by first-year head coach Rob Passage.
Another highlight of the home schedule will be the 150th meeting between Calvin
and Hope which will take place on January 18 at 3:00 p.m. at the Calvin
Fieldhouse. Calvin's homecoming opponent will again be the Britons of Albion
with the homecoming game set for February 8 at 3:00 p.m.. Mixed into the
conference schedule is a non-conference game at home against Orchard Lake St.
Mary's February 15.

The MIAA Tournament will open with first round play on February 26 with the
semifinals slated for February 28 and the championship game for March 1.
                                
The Calvin women's basketball schedule will begin on November 22 and 23 when
the Knights compete at a tournament hosted by Carnegie-Mellon University (PA).
On November 26, the Knights will travel to Grace College of Indiana for a
non-conference game.

The Knights will then open their 12-game home schedule on November 29 and 30
when they host the Grand Rapids Press Tournament that includes Aquinas,
Cornerstone and Hope. Cornerstone reached the NAIA II National Championship
game a year ago while Hope reached the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA III
Tournament.

The Knights swing back into action on December 6 and 7 when they host their own
Calvin Tournament that will include future MIAA-member Tri-State (IN),
Wittenberg (OH) and Case Western Reserve (OH). On December 11, Calvin will host
Aquinas at 7:00 p.m. before breaking for first semester exams.

Calvin will spend the post-Christmas holiday season in Southern California
where the Knights will face three NCAA III non-conference opponents. Calvin
will begin its Southern California swing on New Year's Eve when it takes on the
University of LaVerne at 6:00 p.m. (EST). On January 2, Calvin will take on
Claremont-Mudd Scripps at 10:00 p.m. (EST). Calvin will close out the
three-game trek on January 4 with a game at Occidental College at 6:00 p.m.
(EST).

The Knights open their MIAA schedule on January 8 at Kalamazoo. Calvin MIAA
home opener will be on January 11 when it hosts Olivet.

The MIAA Tournament is scheduled to begin with first round action on February
25 with the MIAA Tournament semifinals slated for February 27 and the
championship game for March 1.
