Deters Named Mideast Region Pitcher of the Year by NCBWA
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The post-season baseball awards continue to roll in for Jim
Deters who recently wrapped up his freshman baseball campaign at Calvin
College.
A 6-4 right-handed pitcher, Deters has been named the NCAA III Mideast Region
Pitcher of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association
(NCBWA). Deters is the first player in Calvin baseball history to receive the
prestigious honor.
A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, was
named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player in baseball this spring and landed a spot
on the All-MIAA 1st team after receiving MIAA Pitcher of the Week accolades
twice during the season. In addition, he was named to the All-Mideast Region
first team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
This past spring, Deters posted a 10-2 record with a 2.67 ERA. He also struck
out 100 batters against just nine walks and also allowed just 70 hits in 84.1
innings of work as opponents batted just .220 against him.
Deters appeared in 16 games, started in 10, completed eight and racked up a
pair of shutout victories. His victory and strikeout totals were both Calvin
single-season records. His only two defeats came against nationally-ranked
opponents as he suffered an 8-5 defeat to Marietta (OH) on March 23 and a 6-0
decision against Wisconsin-Stevens Point last Friday in which he was charged
with four runs, three of which were earned. In-between the losses to Marietta
and Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Deters ripped off a nine-game win streak including
an 8-0 record in MIAA competition, establishing a new league mark for victories
in a season.
Ranked among the nation's leaders in victories and strikeouts throughout the
year, Deters struck out a season-high 15 batters in a 2-1 win over Olivet April
21. He also struck out 13 batters in a 4-0 win over Wittenberg March 12 and 14
batters in a 6-0 win over Kalamazoo on April 20.
