Calvin Sports Report for April 24, 2002

    SOFTBALL

Calvin stayed in the hunt for the fourth and final spot in the MIAA post season
playoffs with a pair of conference victories over St. Mary’s College, 5-0 and
6-0. Currently 7-7 in the MIAA Calvin holds the fourth spot over Adrian College
who has a 5-7 record and an all-important series on April 29 with Kalamazoo
College. Since Adrian holds the tiebreaker over Calvin, they must win both games
against Kalamazoo next week Monday to advance to the post season tournament as
    Calvin’s conference schedule is finished.

In the first game the Knights were able to capitalize on five Belles errors en
route to scoring five runs on nine hits. Calvin also received a strong pitching
performance from freshman Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) who threw her fourth
shutout of the year to raise her record to 10-7. Heyboer scattered six hits over
seven innings pitched as she struck out three and walked none. Sophomore Keri
Cole (Mason County Eastern) and junior Sandy Van Leeuwen (Unity Christain) each
picked up two hits apiece as Cole also added two RBI’s.

In the nightcap Calvin used an offensive barrage to amass six runs on eleven
hits on its way to a 6-0 shutout. Cole went the distance improving her record to
7-5 on the season. She struck out two and walked two while scattering five hits
over seven innings work. The Knights received their biggest offensive boost in
the top of the third inning as freshman Laurel Sands (Rockford) took a full
count fastball over the fence in left center scoring Trisha Balkema (Illiana
Christian) from second base. Senior Susannah Knust (Grandvillle) garnered three
hits, while Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) and Balkema each added two
    singles apiece.

In the event of an Adrian-Kalamazoo split Calvin will return to action in the
conference tournament hosted by Alma College. Action is scheduled to take place
    on May 2-3.

    WOMEN’S TENNIS

The women’s tennis team dropped to 8-6 overall (2-3 MIAA) with a 5-4 loss to
Kalamazoo College. The Knights will return to action on April 25 as they travel
to Alma for a 3 PM contest.
