MIAA Swimming and Diving Recap
HOLLAND - The MIAA Championship hopes for the Calvin women's swimming and
diving team may have faded on the second day of competition at the league meet
but the Knights still came up with an impressive evening of performances.
With just one day of competition left, the defending Calvin women's team trails
first place Hope by a healthy 83-point margin as the Flying Dutch have collected
428 points with Calvin sitting in second place with 345 points.
Calvin crowned two individual champions in the women's competition Friday night
as junior Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) repeated as MIAA champion in the 400 IM
with a pool record time of 4:46.94 while junior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland
Christian) captured first place in the 200 freestyle with an NCAA III B' cut
qualifying time of 1:55.83.
Other top six individual performances in swimming events for the Calvin women
included freshman Courtney Bechler (Holt) who took fourth in the 100 backstroke
(1:03.70); sophomore Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) and junior Megan Bagnall
(Elgin, IL) who were third and fourth respectively int he 100 breaststroke with
times of 1:10.58 and 1:10.66.
Calvin also continued its strong performances on the diving board as freshman
Melissa Huffman (Bay City) took second on the one-meter board with a score of
349.05 while sophomore Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) was fourth (343.80) and
freshman Anna Battaclotte (Cincinnati, OH) was ninth (283.10).
Calvin's 800 freestyle relay also took second (7:57.54) while its 200 medley
relay was second (1:53.43).
In the men's competition, Calvin had a huge night, crowning one individual
champion and one relay champion. Freshman Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL)
collected Calvin's line individual title as he took first place in the 100
butterfly with an NCAA III automatic qualifying, MIAA record and pool record
time of 51.19. Boumgarden is just the second individual in Calvin men's
swimming and diving history to capture a league title in the event, joining Pat
DeJong who accomplished the feat for the Knights in 1975. Boumgarden was part
of a one-two Calvin finish as junior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) was
close behind in second place with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 52.87.
Penninga then led off Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team with a school record
and NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 1:41.45. Along with Boumgarden,
sophomore Brad White and junior Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA), Penninga helped the
800 freestyle relay team repeat as league champion as the Knights cruised in
with a school record and strong NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 6:51.81,
breaking the previous school record by nearly two seconds.
Other top six individual efforts by the Calvin men freshman Ryan Preston
(Richmond, IN) and junior Kevin Katerberg (Dayton, OH) in the 100 breaststroke
as Preston took fourth with a school record time of 59.94 while Katerberg was
fifth in 1:01.22. White was also superb for the Knights in the 100 backstroke,
taking second with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 52.61
Calvin's 200 medley relay team also placed third with a time of 1:39.57.
With one day of competition left, the Calvin men are in third place with 252.50
points while Hope is in second place with 371 points and Kalamazoo in first with
441.50 points.
The final day of competition begins with Saturday morning preliminaries and
then championship finals slated to start at 6:00 pm.
