Veenstra Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - For the third time this season and for the seventh
time in his career, Calvin College junior Jeremy Veenstra has been named
MIAA Player of the Week. Veenstra shares the honor this week with Hope
junior Don Overbeek.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High
School, Veenstra scored 50 points and grabbed 23 rebounds as the Knights
posted a pair of victories at the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Holiday
Classic last weekend in West Palm Beach, Florida.
In a 74-61 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday night,
the 6-6 forward notched his 19th career double-double with 31 points and
15 rebounds. He then stretched his double-figure scoring streak to 30
games with a 19-point effort in a 93-59 win over Hannibal-LaGrange (MO)
Saturday afternoon.
On the week, Veenstra was 20-of-29 from the field, connected on
three-of-four attempts from three-point range and seven-of-nine attempts
from the free throw line. In addition, he was credited with seven
assists, four steals and one blocked shot.
Veenstra leads the MIAA in scoring and rebounding with averages of 21.7
points and 9.3 rebounds a game.
With its victory over Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday afternoon, Calvin
improved to 9-3 overall and stretched its winning streak to four games.
Calvin will open its MIAA campaign Thursday night when it hosts Olivet
at 7:30 pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The Knights are the three-time
defending MIAA champions.
