WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin junior Tricia Dyk of Western Michigan Christian High
School came up with one of her finest all-around performances of her career in
leading the Knights to a 63-56 victory over visiting Grace College of Indiana
Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse. A native of Grand Haven, the 5-6 guard
popped in a season-high 20 points while dishing out seven assists and collecting
seven steals, six rebounds and three blocked shots. On the evening, Dyk was
9-of-17 from the field and 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
Calvin needed every one of Dyk's points as the Knights struggled from the
field, shooting just 38 pecent overall including just 36 percent in the first
half. The victory was the second straight for the Calvin women's basketball team
and lifted its record to 3-2 overall. In addition, the game served as a
milestone for Calvin women's basketball coach Kim Gall who recorded her 200th
collegiate victory with the win.
Calvin led 29-25 at halftime but fell behind early in the second half and
trailed the Lancers (3-6) 45-42 with 10:29 left in regulation. Dyk then ignited
a 7-0 Calvin scoring run with a steal and a layup to bring the Knights within
one points. She then fed sophomore teammate Kim Wolthuis for a go-ahead jump
shot that put Calvin up 46-45. Seconds later, Dyk fed sophomore teammate Liz
Sietsema on a three-point play that put Calvin up four. After Grace came back
to tie the game at 49-49, Calvin took the lead for good on a free throw by
junior Emily Beard with 4:38 left to play. Dyk then fed Wolthuis for a critical
three-pointer with 2:23 left that gave Calvin a 57-50 lead. A minute later, Dyk
helped put the game away with a spinning jumper in the lane that put the Knights
up by nine at 61-52.
Dyk led all scorers with her 20-point effort while Wolthuis came up with 15
points for Calvin. Beard, Sietsema and sophomore Katie Corner chipped in with
seven points apiece.
Calvin will now prepare to play Washington and Jefferson College of
Pennsylvania in a first round game of the Lake Erie (OH) College Tournament
Friday night at 6:00 pm.

Wheaton, IL- Turnover troubles continued to plague the Calvin men's basketball
team as the Knights dropped a 69-63 decision at non-conference rival Wheaton
Tuesday night in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams. The Wheaton victory was
its third consecutive win over a nationally-ranked Division III opponent.
Calvin came into the game ranked 11th in the latest D3hoops.com national poll
while Wheaton was ranked 16th. Wheaton's previous two victories had come over
nationally-ranked Wittenberg and Chicago.
Calvin committed 21 turnovers Tuesday night including 13 in the first half as
the Knights fell behind by 12 points at 28-16 with 5:45 remaining in the first
half. Calvin then rallied with a 14-2 scoring run to close out half to trail by
just two at halftime, 32-30. Sophomore Kevin Broene of Grand Rapids Christian
High School sparked the Knights with eight points in the run including a
three-pointer that tied the game at 30-30 with 36 seconds remaining in the half.
Calvin battled back in the second half but could never tie the game again or
take the lead. Calvin's biggest opportunity came with nine minutes left to play
after it had closed to within two at 54-52 on a layup by sophomore Ryan
Smalligan (East Grand Rapids). Calvin proceeded to come up with four defensive
stops but misfired on four offensive possessions as well including two missed
free throws with 6:47 remaining.
Wheaton rebuilt its lead to five points and held a 65-60 advantage after a pair
of free throws by junior John Carl Williams with one minute remaining. Calvin
sophomore Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) then pulled the Knights to within two at
65-63 on a three-pointer with 45 seconds to play. After Wheaton missed a pair
of free throws with 30 seconds to go, Calvin had a chance to tie or take the
lead but misfired on a shot in the lane with 20 seconds remaining. Wheaton's
Will Landry rebounded the miss and was fouled with 17 seconds left on the clock.
Landry responded by draining both free throws to help put the game away.
"I'm disappointed with this loss because I felt it was a game we could have
won," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek after the game. "We
had several chances to tie the game or take the lead but when the money was on
the line, we missed the shots we needed to make."
Wheaton (4-0) was led in scoring by sophomore Kevin Blomstrom who poured in 26
points along with seven rebounds while Williams added 15 points and five
rebounds. Calvin was led in scoring by Broene who recorded a career-high 21
points. Prins was next for Calvin with 11 points while junior Jeremy Veenstra
(Kalamazoo Christian) collected his 17th career double-double with 10 points and
10 rebounds.
Calvin shot 42.9 percent overall but just 37.1 percent in the second half.
Wheaton shot 52.1 percent overall including 54.5 percent in the second half.
Calvin held a 32-27 edge on the boards but struggled at the free throw line as
it converted just 58.8 percent (10-of-17) of its charity tosses while Wheaton
was 15-of-20 (75.0) at the line.
Calvin will receive another big test on Saturday when it hosts Division II
Ferris State Saturday at 3:00 pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
