ALL-MIAA WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAMS ANNOUNCED--TRICIA DYK NAMED MIAA MVP
Calvin College junior Tricia Dyk has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player in women's soccer. A native of Grand Haven and a graduate of Western Michigan Christian High School, Dyk led the MIAA in scoring this year with 21 goals and 10 assists for 52 points in conference play. Her goal and point total in conference games is the third-highest in MIAA women's soccer history. In overall games, Dyk finished the year with 27 goals, 12 assists and 66 points from her position as a forward. Dyk's season goal total matches the third-best single-season total established by older sister Tara Dyk in 1995. Her season total of 66 points is also the third-best single-season total in Calvin history while her assist total matches the third-best single-season total in Calvin history. Dyk is the third player from Calvin and the second from her family to receive MIAA MVP honors in women's soccer as Kristin Penzotti was so honored from Calvin in 1994 while older sister Tara was league !
MVP in 1997. Of her 27 goals this year, seven were game-winners including five game-winners in league play. Dyk also notched at least one point in 19 of Calvin's 20 games this fall.
Dyk was also named to the All-MIAA 1st team for the third straight year. She was joined on the All-MIAA 1st team by senior teammate Tara Bergsma. A midfielder, Bergsma scored eight goals and notched five assists this year for the Knights * all of which came in league play. Bergsma is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA 1st team after receiving All-MIAA 2nd team honors in 2000 and in 1999.
Named to the All-MIAA 2nd team from Calvin are seniors Larissa Onderlinde and Stephanie
Fritz and juniors Leah VanderPloeg and Sarah Wind. A forward from Kalamazoo who
prepped at Kalamazoo Christian High School, Onderlinde proved to be one of the most lethal scoring threats in the MIAA this fall. Onderlinde finished second in the MIAA scoring race behind Dyk with 49 points on the strength of 18 goals and 13 assists, ranking her second in goals and assists. In overall games, Onderlinde scored 20 goals and notched 14 assists for a total of 54 points. Of her 20 goals this year, five were game-winners. Her overall assist total matches the Calvin single-season record for assists of 14 originally set by Tracy Veurink in 1990. Onderlinde also finished the year with 54 points, matching the fifth-best single-season total in Calvin history. In addition, Onderlinde closed out her Calvin career with 37 goals, 32 assists and 104 points to rank seventh on the Calvin career list for goals, third in assists and sixth in points.
Fritz is a marking back from Middleton, Wisconsin and is a graduate of Middleton High
School. She was named to the All-MIAA 2nd team for the second straight year. Wind hails
from Bellflower and is a graduate of Valley Christian High School. Like Fritz, Wind is
receiving 2nd team All-MIAA accolades for the second straight year. A goaltender,
VanderPloeg is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. In
conference games, VanderPloeg recorded seven shutout victories and posted a
goals-against-average of 1.23 along with 59 saves. In overall games, VanderPloeg recorded a goals-against-average of 1.30 and picked up 110 saves and 10 shutout victories.
As a team, Calvin finished the year with a 15-5 overall record and took second in the MIAA
with an 11-3 conference mark. With its 15 victories, Calvin reached the double-digit plateau in victories for the 12th consecutive year. Calvin's overall victory total also matched the fourth-highest win total in school history.
