Calvin Sports Report for October 26
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Calvin split a pair of matches at its own Midwest Invitational on Friday to
move to 17-11 on the year. Calvin opened the tournament with a 30-24, 30-27,
30-17 victory over Hanover. The Knights were then defeated by Dordt, ranked
seventh in the latest NAIA national poll, 30-17, 30-21, 30-18.
In the win over Hanover (8-21), Calvin was led by junior Melissa Pell (Fremont)
who tallied 12 kills. Sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) and junior Cassie
Christopher (Fruitport) added nine kills apiece with Balkema collecting 10 digs
and Christopher 10 digs. Freshmen Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) and Kristin
DeGroot (Tulare, CA) were next with eight kills apiece with Kuipers recording
five blocks. Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) tossed out 38 assists
while junior Jessica Huisjen (Lansing) came off the bench to provide five
service aces.
In the loss to Dordt (27-3), Pell had 10 kills and Balkema nine kills. Pell
also picked up five blocks while Ahrenholz had 28 digs.
Calvin will face Wheaton in an 11:30 match on Saturday.
Calvin's MIAA Tournament seeding is also set as the Knights are the third seed
for next week's MIAA Tournament. Calvin will host sixth-seeded Albion Tuesday
in a first round match at 7:00 pm.
Hope is the top seed and will host eighth-seeded Olivet while second-seeded
Alma will host St. Mary's. Fourth-seeded Kalamazoo will host fifth-seeded
Adrian in the other first round match Tuesday.
The MIAA Tournament semifinals are slated for Friday November 2 at the site of
the highest remaining seed with the semifinal site also serving as the site for
the championship match November 3.
