CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 15, 2001
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin stretched its unbeaten streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over
non-conference rival Aquinas College Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. In
addition, the victory allowed the Knights to reach the .500 mark as they
improved to 2-2-2 overall.
Aquinas controlled play in the opening minutes of the first half but the Knights
switched the momentum midway through the half and broke through for the game's
first goal when freshman Mike Vollmer (Grand Haven) flicked a left-footed shot
past Aquinas keeper Carl Whitehouse off a pass from sophomore Sam DeYoung
(Western Michigan Christian) in the 26th minute of play.
Calvin upped its lead to 2-0 on a well-scripted goal by junior Charles Telep
(Sewickley, PA) in the 54th minute. Freshman Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids
Christian) ignited the play with a rush up the right wing and cross to the far
post. Telep collected the pass in the air and slammed in the shot for his
team-leading third goal of the year.
Aquinas (4-5-0) cut the deficit in half on a goal in the 66th minute as Nate
Rose scored on a header in the box with Steve Dobb and Whitehouse drawing
assists on the play.
Calvin held off the Saints the rest of the way however to claim the 2-1 win.
Calvin finished with a 13-12 shots at goal advantage including a 7-2 advantage
in the second half. Senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) was again superb for
Calvin in nets, collecting four saves. Whitehouse also collected four saves for
Aquinas.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 4:00 pm
MIAA contest. Wednesday's contest will be the MIAA opener for both teams.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin stretched its winning streak to three games with a come-from-behind 3-1
victory at St. Mary's Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in
the MIAA.
St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Shannon Artnick in the first half.
Calvin came back to tie the game on a tally by Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
Christian) later in the half and then took a 2-1 lead into halftime on a late
first half goal by senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian).
Dyk then provided insurance with an unassisted goal in the second half. In
addition, senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) and junior Julie Smith
(Bothell, WA) were both credited with an assist for the Knights.
Calvin will travel to Aquinas Monday for a 4:00 pm non-conference contest and
will then host Adrian Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin bowed in three games to Baldwin-Wallace in the semifinals of the Gold
Division Pool Saturday afternoon at the John Carroll/Case Western Reserve
Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio. Calvin finished the tournament with a 2-1
record and is now 7-2 overall. The loss to Baldwin-Wallace marked Calvin's
second loss of the year in tournament play to the Yellow Jackets as
Baldwin-Wallace also defeated Calvin in three games at the Kalamazoo College
Hornet Invitational September 1.
Calvin was led in defeate by sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) who tallied
15 digs and nine kills while freshman Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) contributed
18 digs, eight kills and three blocks. Senior Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN)
came up with 35 assists while junior Cassie Christopher had 17 digs and three
service aces and freshman Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) four blocks.
Calvin returns to action Monday night when it hosts St. Mary's in an MIAA match
at 7:00 pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The top-ranked Calvin men's cross country team opened its 2001 campaign with a
sixth place showing in a field of 28 teams at the Wisconsin-Parkside
Invitational Saturday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Second-ranked Wisconsin-LaCrosse
took first place with 74 points while Calvin was sixth with 163 points.
Senior Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) was Calvin's top finisher, placing
eighth with a time of 25:35. Senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON) was Calvin's
second man, finishing 23rd in 26:01 while senior Justin Pfruender (Midland) was
32nd in 26:13. Other Calvin finishers included sophomore Dave Haagsma (South
Christian) in 58th (26:34); sophomore Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) in 63rd (26:37);
senior David Ritsema (Denver, CO) 68th (26:43) and senior Peter Armstrong
(Lacey, WA) 76th (26:50).
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the MIAA Jamboree
hosted by Hope College.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The 11th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team opened its 2001 campaign in
strong fashion, winning the Parkside Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin for the
fourth straight year. Running in a field of 24 teams, Calvin took first place
with 60 points, finishing ahead of several Division II schools including
ninth-ranked Edinboro State of Pennsylvania and 13th ranked Hillsdale.
Senior Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo Christian) and sophomore Sarah Hastings (Traverse
City) both earned top-10 finishes as Boot took seventh (18:36) and Hastings
eighth (18:38). Calvin maintained a tight pack throughout the race as junior
Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) was 12th (18:49); senior Laura Medema (Grand Rapids
Christian) 14th (18:49); senior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) 20th
(18:55); sophomore Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield) 28th (19:03 and sophomore Leah
Cornell (Pennfield, NY) 63rd (19:35).
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the MIAA Jamboree
hosted by Hope College.
