CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 12, 2001
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with a 2-1 victory at Alma Wednesday afternoon
to improve to 3-2 overall and to stretch its winning streak to two games.
Senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) provided both goals for the
Knights, scoring both goals in the first half. Onderlinde put Calvin on the
board 4:20 into the contest as she successfully converted a penalty kick.
Calvin was awarded the penalty kick after junior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
Christian) had been taken down in the box on an offensive rush.
Onderlinde then scored unassisted in the 24th minute to give the Knights a 2-0
lead. The second goal by Onderlinde was her fourth of the year. The Scots (3-3
overall, 0-1 MIAA) countered with a goal by Megan Karchon just over a minute
into the second half but would not score again as Calvin held control of the
contest the rest of the way.
Calvin finished the contest with a 32-9 shots at goal advantage while junior
Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) collected five saves for the Knights in goal.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to St. Mary's for an MIAA
contest scheduled to begin at noon.
