CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 31, 2001
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin opened up its 2001 season with a loss to the visiting Polar Bears from
Ohio Northern University by a score of 4-2. Calvin outshot Ohio Northern 29
shots to 18 shots but could not find the back of the net. The Polar Bears scored
three of the first four goals, leading them to a 3-2 halftime lead.
Ohio Northern received two goals from senior midfielder Melissa Swaab, a goal
and an assist from Laura Smolinski, and a score from Melissa Husson. Calvin
picked up goals from junior striker Tricia Dyk and sophomore forward Dana Haan.
Calvin returns to action Saturday afternoon as it travels to Cornerstone
University. The game starts at 2 PM.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin opened defense of its Hornet Invitational crown with a pair of wins on
Friday afternoon over Olivet College and Millikin University. The victories put
them in first place in their pool heading into Saturday's competition.
In the game versus MIAA foe Olivet Calvin made quick work of the Comets, downing
them in three straight games 30-17, 30-13, 30-27. Calvin was led by junior
middle hitter Melissa Pell, who tallied 9 kills and 7 blocks. Sophomore Trisha
Balkema also added 7 kills. Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz dished out 22 assists
and 5 aces. Freshman Kristin DeGroot pitched in with 15 digs and 3 blocks.
In the 6:30 match Calvin defeated Millikin University 30-24, 30-15, 30-24.
Freshman Kathy Brenneman led Calvin as she collected 12 digs, 10 kills, and
three aces. Kara Kuipers added 10 kills and 5 blocks. Ahrenholz tallied 36
assists and 11 digs.
Calvin will resume play at 10 AM Saturday morning to finish out pool play. With
a win or a loss Calvin will play at 4:00 PM for either 1st place or 3rd place.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin opened its season with a loss to nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan on
Friday night by a score of 5-0. Currently ranked 5th according to a NSCAA poll
the Bishops dominated the game controlling the shots on goal by a 26-4 mark.
Calvin goalkeepers Matt Thelen and Justin Bouw combined for eight saves.
Calvin will return to action Saturday evening when they take on Allegheny
College. Game time is 5 PM.
