Calvin 9th in Final Sears Director's Cup Standings

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Calvin College has finished ninth in the final Sears
Director's Cup Division III standings with 474 points. Calvin's ninth place
finish is its third-highest finish ever in the Sears Director's Cup standings.
Calvin's total of 474 points is its second-highest, surpassed only by its sixth
place total of 561 points accumulated last year when Calvin recorded its best
Sears Director's Cup finish. It marks the third consecutive year that Calvin
has recorded a top-10 finish as it finished seventh in 1999 with 350 points. In
addition, it marks the sixth consecutive year that Calvin has finished in the
top-25. Since the Sears Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA Division III
level for the 1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only nine schools to
finish in the top-25 all six years. Joining Calvin in the group are Williams
(MA), College of New Jersey, Amherst (MA), Middlebury (Vt), Ithaca (NY),
Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland, Emory (Ga.) and Rowan (N.J.).

The Sears Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA
Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of
Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate
athletics program in the country. The Sears Director's Cup race is held at the
NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90
points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.

Williams captured the 2000-2001 Sears Director's Cup competition with a total of
897.5 points, marking its fifth Sears Director's Cup crown in the last six
years. Middlebury earned second place with 728.5 points, the College of New
Jersey finished third with 713.5 points, Emory placed fourth with 633 points
while Ithaca rounded out the top-five with 584 points.

These are the final standings and include the recently completed spring sports
of men's and women's track and field, field; men's and women's tennis; men's and
women's golf; men's and women's lacrosse; softball and baseball. Calvin scored
in men's and women's track and field this spring. The women's track and field
team earned 90 points with its second place finish at the NCAA III Championships
while the men's track and field team earned 79 points with its fifth place
finish. Calvin scored in seven sports this year highlighted by the national
championship performance of its men's cross country team in November. The
national championship finish was worth 100 points in the Sears Director's Cup
standings. Other teams that scored points included the women's cross country
team, men's basketball team and men's and women's swim teams.

This is the sixth year for the Sears Director's Cup chase at the NCAA III level.
Calvin also finished 25th during the 1997-98 season with 200 points; 22nd for
the 1996-97 season with 321.5 points and 11th during the 1995-96 campaign with
425 points.
