Calvin repeats as NCAA III men's basketball attendance champion
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - For the 11th time in the last 16 years and for the 12th time
in school history, Calvin has finished as the NCAA Division III leader in men's
basketball attendance. Calvin gained the top spot for the second straight year
as the Division III attendance leader with 3,369 spectators per game, after
winning the 2000 title with an average of 3,469 fans per game. MIAA rival Hope
finished second at 2,156 while Illinois Wesleyan was third with an average of
2,132.
Calvin's 2000-2001 average was strengthened by three crowds that topped the
4,000-fan plateau including a sell-out crowd of 4,500 fans against Hope January
20. Calvin also topped 4,000 fans in an MIAA Tournament semifinal game against
Olivet February 23 and in a first round NCAA III Tournament game against
Defiance March 1.
In addition, Calvin and Hope helped the seven-team Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association to top all Division III conferences for a tenth straight
year with an average of 1,163 fans a game. The eight-team College Conference of
Illinois and Wisconsin finished second with an average of 1,131 fans a game.
Calvin's average of 3,369 fans is the fourth highest single-season average in
school history, surpassed only by the 1977-78 average of 3,630; the 1992-93 NCAA
Division III record average of 4,018 and the 1999-2000 average of 3,469.
