MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Calvin sophomore Annie VanderLaan is headed to the NCAA III Championships in track and field. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, VanderLaan posted an NCAA III automatic qualifying score of 4,334 points in the seven-event heptathlon competition Monday and Tuesday at the Baldwin-Wallace Twi-Light Invitational. Competing in just her second-ever heptathlon competition, VanderLaan surpassed the NCAA III automatic qualifying minimum by six points.
On Monday, VanderLaan compiled a four-event total of 2,722 points as she went 15.08 in the 100 meter hurdles; 4-11 ¾ in the high jump; 29-5 ½ in the shot put and 26.14 in the 200 meters. Her time in the 200 meters was a personal-best.
On Tuesday, she came back with a personal-best mark of 16-0 ¼ in the long jump while also posting a mark of 72-1 in the javelin and a time of 2:24.80 in the 800 meters. With her total of 4,334 points, VanderLaan finished second in a field of 13 heptathletes.
VanderLaan is the 10th member of the Calvin women's track and field team to qualify automatically for the NCAA III Championships May 24-26 in Decatur, Illinois.
Also qualified automatically from the Calvin women's track and field team are seniors Andrea Rip (Bothell, WA), Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN), Sara Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian), Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian); juniors Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian), Lyndsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) and Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids Christian) and freshmen Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) and Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield).
Junior Jason DeVries (Unity Christian) and freshman Dan Rinzema (Unity Christian) also competed in the 10-event decathlon competition Monday and Tuesday at Baldwin-Wallace. Rinzema finished third in a field of 13, posting a two-day score of 4,985 points while DeVries was seventh with a total of 4,579 points.
Both individuals were competing in their second-ever decathlon competition.
