BASEBALL
Calvin dropped an 8-3 decision to visiting Grand Valley State University Monday
afternoon to fall to 18-13 on the year. Grand Valley State (26-16) broke a 1-1
tie with five runs in the top of the third as the Lakers collected three hits,
one walk and used one Calvin error to take a 6-1 lead.
Calvin and Grand Valley then traded runs in the seventh and eighth inning to
provide the final margin. Calvin picked up its run in the seventh on a
sacrifice fly by sophomore Mark Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) that scored junior
Andrew Drake (Marion, OH) who led off the inning with a single to center.
In the eighth, Calvin scored its third run of the game as freshman Terry O'Neal
(Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) led off with a single and then sped all the way from
first base on a booming double to left by sophomore Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek,
CA).
Junior Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 0-1 on
the year with senior Adam Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) coming on in relief in the
fourth and junior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) throwing the final two frames. 7-0
lefthander Nathan Barden picked up the win for Grand Valley to up his record to
3-0. Barden struck out eight batters in six innings of work.
Grand Valley outhit Calvin 10-7 with no Calvin player collecting more than one
hit. Freshman Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) also had a double for the Knights
to go Eppinga's double for Calvin's only two extra-base hits.
Calvin is back in action Friday afternoon when it journeys to Siena Heights for
a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
SOFTBALL
Calvin closed out its 2001 campaign with a 11-3, 8-7 doubleheader sweep over
Grand Rapids Community College Monday afternoon.
Calvin (14-22) pounded out 11 hits in gaining the five-inning mercy-rule win in
Monday's opener. Junior Susannah Knust (Grandville) went 3-for-5 at the plate
with five RBI's while senior Holly DeYoung (Kalamazoo Christian), sophomore
Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo
Christian) all collected two hits apiece.
Junior Jen Bowen (Troy) was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits in five
innings of work while striking out two and walking three.
In game two, junior Joanne Haven (Dorchester, ON) slapped a single up the middle
in the bottom of the seventh to score Dyksterhouse from third base with the
winning run. Calvin picked up eight hits in the victory with freshman Tricia
Balkema (Highland, IN) going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's while Knust and
Dyksterhouse also had two hits apiece.
Sophomore Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) was the winning pitcher for the Knights,
striking out three and walking three while allowing eight hits in seven innings
of work.
