MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Both Calvin track and field teams wrapped up MIAA dual meet crowns with conference victories over visiting Albion and Adrian Wednesday afternoon.
In the men's competition, Calvin defeated Albion 86-67 and Adrian 126-68. The pair of wins allowed the Knights to finish the MIAA dual meet season with a 5-0 record while extending its MIAA dual meet win streak to 33.
Albion pushed Calvin throughout the meet however and with just two events remaining, trailed by five points but the Knights proceeded to sweep the 5,000 meters and capture the 4 x 400 meter relay to finish with a 19-point edge.
On the women's side, Calvin defeated Albion 134-16 and Adrian 131-10 to completed its MIAA dual meet season 6-0. The Knights have now won 56 consecutive MIAA dual meets.
The Calvin men received another yeoman-like effort from senior Phil Sikkenga (Wheaton, IL) as he took first place in the 100 meters (10.98), 200 meters (21.90) and 110 high hurdles (14.63). His time in the 110 high hurdles was an NCAA III provisional qualifying time. Sikkenga later anchored Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team of freshman Jeff Konzcal (Powell, OH), junior Keith VanGoor (Midland Park, NJ) and sophomore Steve Abbring (Highland, IN) to a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:17.44.
Calvin's weight-men also had a huge afternoon as junior Ryan Moore (Wexford, PA) unleashed a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 154-11 to win the discus while sophomore Nick VanderPlas (McBain) cranked out a first place heave of 44-10 ½ to win the shot put. Junior Cameron Harrison (Colorado Springs, CO) led Calvin's 1-2-3 sweep in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:15.03 while senior Paul Petersen (Crawfordsville, IN) was second (15:28.57) and freshman Dave Haagsma (South Christian) third in 16:26.10.
Calvin also picked up a 1-2-3 sweep in the 3,000 meter steeplechase led by junior Justin Momany-Pfruender (Midland) who cruised to a career-best and first place time of 9:24.58 followed by junior David Ritsema (Denver, CO) in second (9:35.46) and freshman Kyle Carrick (Tokyo, Japan) in third (9:40.69). Calvin had a clean sweep in the high jump with sophomore Cameron Harrison (Lake Stevens, WA) winning with a height of 6-4 while senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) took second and freshman Jeremy Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) took third.
Other winners for the Calvin men included senior Kevin VerBeek (Lansing, IL) in the 1,500 meters (4:02.56) and senior Mark DeWeerd (Unity Christian) in the pole vault (15-6).
In the women's meet, Calvin sophomore Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) was a triple-winner, taking the high jump (5-2); the 100 hurdles (15.18) and the 400 hurdles (1:05.02). Her time in the 100 hurdles was an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance. Freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) also had a big afternoon, winning the 100 meters with a career-best time of 12.91 while also taking the 200 meters in 26.45.
Junior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) was also a double winner, taking the long junp (18-8 ½) and the 400 meters (58.38). Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay team of Haan, Mulder, junior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN) cruised in with a first place time of 48.34 while its 4 x 400 meter relay team took first place in 4:15.49. Pierce was also an individual winner in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.40.
Calvin's throwing crew was also stellar Wednesday with freshman Katie Corner (GR Catholic Central) winning the shot put with a career-best throw of 39-6 ½ while freshman Jamie Febo (Sparta) took the discus (130-11) and senior Andrea Rip (Bothell, WA) captured the javelin (128-4).
Calvin also cruised in the distance events with sophomore Jodi VerMeulen (Holland Christian) winning the 5,000 meters (19:2011); junior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) winning the 1,500 meters (4:56.74) and junior Laura Medema (Grand Rapids Christian) winning the 3,000 meters (10:33.36).
Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare for the Millikin Classic Saturday afternoon in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin will host the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 24-26.
SOFTBALL
Calvin dropped two important league games to Adrian by scores of 6-2 and 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field. The losses move them to sixth place in the league with a 2-6 record and a 11-14 record overall.
The story of the first game was defense and Calvin could not come up with any. Adrian scored six runs on nine hits and were aided by four Calvin errors. Five of the six runs for Adrian were unearned as Calvin pitcher Jen Bowen picked up the loss. Calvin spread out five hits for two runs for the game
In the nightcap Calvin once again received a solid pitching effort from Bowen, but could not find the bats. Calvin mustered six hits and left nine stranded on base while Adrian collected four runs on 12 scattered hits. Susannah Knust had two hits to lead the Knights.
The Knights will return to action Thursday to make up a rained out double-header with St. Mary's Game time is 3 PM.

Calvin picked up its first conference victory of the year and improved to 3-12 overall with an 8-1 win at Adrian Wednesday afternoon. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they host Hope at 3:00 pm

BASEBALL
Calvin outlasted host Manchester to capture a 15-10 slugfest Wednesday afternoon. The Knights (14-8 overall) banged out a season-high 21 hits, collecting four homeruns in the process. Calvin provided most of its damage in the fourth and fifth inning, scoring four times in the fourth and five times in the fifth. In the fourth, freshman outfielder Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) belted his first collegiate homerun. Calvin also used the long ball in the sixth and seventh as sophomore Mark Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) cranked a three-run shot in the sixth and Griffith drilled his second roundtripper of the game in the seventh. Sophomore Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) followed Griffith's shot with a blast of his own to ring up his first collegiate homer.
Senior Adam Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the year, striking out four batters and walking one in four innings of work. Sophomore Seth McLaughlin (South Christian), junior Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) and seniors Ryan Wolthuis (South Christian) and Zac Jackson (Kinsman, OH) also saw time for the Knights on the mound.
Senior Ross Hunderman (Holland Christian) was the catalyst for the Calvin offensive attack as he went 5-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored. Eppinga was also 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI'.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Aquinas at 4:00 pm in a non-conference game at Calvin Field.
