MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Both Calvin track and field teams posted MIAA dual meet victories Saturday as the Calvin women topped Alma 148-14 and St. Mary's 157-5 while the Calvin men defeated Alma 95-64. The victories allowed the Calvin women to improve to 4-0 in MIAA competition while the Calvin men improved to 3-0 in the league.
In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in all 19 events with junior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) and sophomore Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) both winning a pair of events. Mulder captured the long jump (18-3 ½) and the 400 meters (57.70) as she came up with NCAA III provisional qualifying performances in both events. VanderLaan was a winner in the 100 hurdles (15.43) and 400 hurdles (1:04.60). Her time in the 400 hurdles was an NCAA III provisional qualifying time. Vanderlaan also took second in the high jump (5-2).
Freshman Jamie Febo (Sparta) also established a new school record in the discus, uncorking a throw of 133-11; shattering the previous school mark by more than two feet. Both of Calvin's relay teams also had big days, posting NCAA III automatic qualifying times in both events. Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay team of junior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian); Mulder, freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) and senior Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN) took first place with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 48.17. In the 4 x 400 meter relay, Calvin's squad of junior Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids Christian), senior Sara Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian), Mulder and Pierce came in with a first place and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 3:48.13. Calvin's 4 x 400 time in the fastest time posted in NCAA III women's track and field this spring.
Other individual winners for the Calvin women included freshman Stephanie Holwerda (Unity Christian) in the high jump (5-2); freshman Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) in the 5,000 meters (18:59.05); senior Andrea Rip (Bothell, WA) in the javelin (130-6); freshman Katie Corner (Catholic Central) in the shot put (38-4 ¾); junior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) in the 1,500 meters (4:55.22); Pierce in the 100 meters (12.64); freshman Tracey Diephuis (Grand Rapids Christian) in the 800 meters (2:22.06); Haan in the 200 meters (26.45); freshman Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield) in the 3,000 meters (10:33.18); Rachel Veltkamp in the pole vault (10-0); freshman Carrie Zatarga (Coopersville) in the hammer throw (105-5) and junior Mae Baber (Brandon, WI) in the triple jump (34-1 ¼).
In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in 12 events with senior Mark DeWeerd (Unity Christian) highlighting the day for the Knights with an NCAA III automatic qualifying and first place mark of 16-4 in the pole vault. DeWeerd just missed breaking the school record of 16-8 as his final attempt at 16-9 appeared to be successful until he brushed the bar down with his jersey on the way down.
Calvin's throwing crew also had a strong afternoon as junior Ryan Moore (Wexford, PA) won the discus with a career-best throw of 150-8 while sophomore Nick VanderPlas (McBain) won the shot put with a career-best throw of 45-5 ½. In addition, sophomore Jason Chaddock (Wheaton, IL) captured the hammer throw with a mark of 123-4.
Calvin's distance contingent was also stellar as junior Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 3,000 meters with a blazing time of 8:32.15. In the 5,000 meters, junior Cam Harrison (Colorado Springs, CO) took first place with a time of 15:14.43 while junior Peter Armstrong (Lacey, WA) cranked out a season-best time of 1:56.47 in winning the 800 meters. In addition, senior Kevin VerBeek (Lansing, IL) was a winner in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.90.
Senior Phil Sikkenga (Wheaton, IL) was also a double-winner, taking the 400 meters (48.43) and 200 meters (21.88) while also anchoring Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team to a first place time of 3:19.93.
Senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) was Calvin's other individual winner as he captured the high jump at a height of 6-6.
Both Calvin track and field teams will host Albion and Adrian next Wednesday at 2:00 pm in MIAA dual meets.
SOFTBALL
Calvin posted a 3-2 record at the two-day Wisconsin-Oshkosh Snowbird Invitational to move to 11-12 on the year.
On Friday, Calvin defeated host Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Wisconsin-LaCrosse by 2-0 scores before falling to Wisconsin-Stout 7-2.
On Saturday, the Knights defeated Aurora (IL) 8-0 before finishing play with a 4-3 loss to Lawrence (WI).
Freshman Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) hurled her second collegiate shutout in the win over Oshkosh as she struck out three batters and walked one while scattering five hits. Calvin scored both of its runs in the third inning using a pair of hits and a pair of Oshkosh errors to score twice. Junior Jennifer Bowen (Troy) then tossed her first collegiate shutout in the win over LaCrosse as she scattered four hits and struck out a pair of batters. Calvin broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the seventh with senior Holly DeYoung (Kalamazoo Christian) delivering a two-run two-out RBI single to drive in juniors Lindsay Heinkel (Milwaukee, WI) and JoAnne Haven (Dorchester, ON).
In the loss to Wisconsin-Stout, Calvin jumped out to a 2-1 lead only to see Stout score six times in the fourth inning to pull away for the win. Sophomore Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) took the loss for Calvin while senior Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Cole then hurled her second shutout victory of the weekend in the win over Aurora while also driving in the final run of the game. In the loss to Lawrence, Bowen took the loss. Calvin scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead but Lawrence came back with two runs of its own in the bottom half to claim the win.
Calvin will now prepare for a busy week of conference action as the Knights will travel to St. Mary's Monday; host Adrian Wednesday and then journey to Hope on Saturday for conference twinbills.
BASEBALL
Calvin remained on top of the MIAA standings as the Knights swept a three-game weekend series from the visiting Adrian Bulldogs.
Calvin (13-8 overall, 8-1 MIAA) opened the series with a 13-2 win Friday afternoon with junior Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) allowing just three hits over seven innings of work while striking out four batters and walking none.
Calvin picked up 10 hits off of the Adrian pitching staff while also capitalizing on seven Bulldog errors. Calvin scored three runs in the bottom of the first with junior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Dirk Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) connecting on RBI singles.
Calvin broke the game open with nine runs in the fifth inning as the Knights collected six hits while also using four Adrian errors to provide the damage. Eppinga picked up a two-run RBI single in the inning while senior Jason TeBos (Calvin Christian) had an RBI double and senior Aaron Wiers (Chicago, IL) a two-run RBI double. The pitching victory by Ott upped his season record to 3-1.
On Saturday, Calvin took both ends of a doubleheader, winning game one 3-1 and then winning game two 9-4. In the opener, the left-handed Wiers struck out seven batters while allowing just three hits as Calvin came up with a come-from-behind win. The seven strikeouts by Wiers boosted his career MIAA strikeout total to 96, moving him past former Calvin pitcher Chris Doelman and into fourth place on the all-time MIAA strikeout list.
Adrian picked up all three of its hits and its lone run in the bottom of the third. Calvin tied the score on a two-out RBI single to left by Hunderman and then took the lead in the sixth as Eppinga delivered Wiers from second base with the go-ahead run. Wiers reached base on a single to right and moved to second on a well-placed sacrifice bunt by junior Andrew Drake (Marion, OH). Junior Matt DeHoek (Grand Rapids Christian) then provided a lift in the top of the seventh as he cranked a one-out solo homerun down the left-field line. The roundtripper was the first of DeHoek's collegiate career. The pitching victory by Wiers upped his record to 4-2 on the year.
In Saturday's second game, senior Ryan Wolthuis (South Christian) picked up his second conference victory of the year as he threw 5.2 innings while allowing six hits and four runs. Calvin jumped out to a 7-1 lead with three runs in the first, three in the third and one in the fourth. Wiers belted his third homerun of the spring in Calvin's three-run third, leading off the inning with a solo blast that curled just inside the right-field foul pole. DeHoek later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left.
In the sixth, Adrian (7-18, 4-5 MIAA) scored a pair of runs on three hits. Junior pitcher Matt Schmitz (Ionia) came on in relief of Wolthuis in the inning and with two outs and runners on second and third, struck out the first batter he faced to get Calvin out of the jam.
Calvin then scored twice in the bottom half of the inning with junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO ripping his third homerun of the spring with a solo blast to right. Eppinga later picked up an RBI single to complete the scoring.
In the top of the seventh, Schmitz retired the side in order to pick up his third save of the year.
Eppinga finished the three-game series with a .545 batting average (6-for-11) while driving in five runs. Wiers batted .571 (4-for-7) in the three-game set while driving in four runs.
Calvin is scheduled to host Aquinas Tuesday in a non-conference game at 4:00 pm.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin split a pair of non-conference matches Saturday to move to 2-12 on the year. Calvin opened the day with a 5-2 loss to Lake Superior State but came back to defeat Spring Arbor College 5-4. Freshman Mark Brieve (Holland Christian) allowed Calvin to pull out the win over Spring Arbor as he recorded a three-game win at number-six singles with the match tied at 4-4.
Calvin returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 3:00 pm conference match.
