MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin closed out its MIAA regular season with a 110-70 victory over
Alma in front of more than 3,200 fans at the Calvin Fieldhouse Saturday,
allowing the Knights to reach the 20-win plateau for the 12th time in
school history.
Calvin (20-4 overall) will head into next week's MIAA Tournament as the
top seed. With the top seed, the Knights receive a first round bye
Wednesday night and will host the MIAA Tournament semifinals February 23
and the MIAA Tournament Championship game February 24.
Calvin will face the winner of Wednesday's first round game between
fourth-seeded Olivet (11-11) and fifth-seeded Kalamazoo (9-15) in the
second semifinal Friday night at 8:00 pm. Other first round games
Wednesday will pit second-seeded Hope (15-9) against seventh-seeded Alma
(8-16) and third-seeded Albion (16-8) against sixth-seeded Adrian
(12-12). The Hope/Alma winner will face the Albion/Adrian winner in the
first semifinal Friday night at 6:00 pm. The MIAA Tournament
Championship game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm with the winner
receiving the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
In Saturday's win over Alma, Calvin raced out to a 59-30 halftime lead
and never looked back as 12 Calvin players got into the scorebook.
Sophomore Bryan Foltice (Tri-unity Christian) led Calvin with 18 points
while sophomore Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian) came up with a
career-high 16 points off the bench. Sophomore Jeremy Veenstra
(Kalamazoo Christian) also had 15 points and eight rebounds while senior
Josh Tubergen (Holland Christian) had 13 points and seven boards and
freshman Rob Holleman (Chandler, MN) 11 points off the bench.
Alma was led in scoring by Andrew VanSchoick and Brian Hendricks with 12
points each while Rob Taylor had 11.
With his 15-point effort, Veenstra finished as the MIAA's scoring
champion, becoming the 11th player in Calvin men's basketball history to
win an MIAA scoring title. Veenstra finished the 12-game league
schedule with 270 points for a league scoring average of 22.5 points a
game.
Calvin shot 56.8 percent in the first half and finished with a 49.3
percent overall field goal clip. Alma shot just 35.3 percent overall
including just 30.6 percent in the first half. Calvin outrebounded the
Scots 49-37 with senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) leading the Knights
on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
For the second straight game, Calvin was unable to keep up the pace in
the second half as the Knights dropped a 90-56 decision at Alma Saturday
afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
In a 60-51 loss to Hope Wednesday night, Calvin led 33-30 at halftime
but could only come up with five second half field goals. Against Alma
Saturday, Calvin trailed just 36-33 at halftime after shooting 56
percent in the first half. Calvin could only come up with six second
half field goals however as the regionally-ranked Scots (17-6 overall,
12-2 MIAA) outscored the Knights 56-23 in the second half.
With the loss, Calvin closes out its MIAA regular season campaign with a
fourth place 7-7 mark while also dropping to 12-12 overall.
As the fourth seed for next week's MIAA Tournament, Calvin will host
fifth-seeded Olivet (13-12) in a first round game Tuesday night at the
Calvin Fieldhouse scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm. Other first round games
will pit eighth-seeded St. Mary's (8-15) at top-seeded Hope (22-2);
seventh-seeded Adrian (8-14) at second-seeded Alma (17-6) and
sixth-seeded Albion (4-20) at third-seeded Kalamazoo (16-7).
The Calvin/Olivet winner will face the Hope/St. Mary's winner at the
site of the highest remaining seed in a Thursday semifinal at 7:30. The
other Thursday night semifinal will pit the Adrian/Alma winner against
the Albion/Kalamazoo winner at the site of the highest remaining seed.
Thursday's winners will meet in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at
3:00 pm at the site of the highest remaining seed with the winner
receiving the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
In its loss to Alma Saturday, Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore
Jennifer Plakmeyer (Calvin Christian) who came up with 10 points and
five assists. Freshman Katie Corner (Catholic Central) also came up
with eight points in her first career start while sophomore Emily Beard
(Southfield Christian) had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Alma was led in scoring by sophomore Janell Twietmeyer who popped in 25
points and grabbed eight rebounds along with five assists. Freshman
Karen Hall and sophomore Shelly Ulfig added 15 points apiece with senior
Joy Horton chipping in with 11 points. Alma shot 57.8 percent overall
including 77.4 percent in the second half. The Scots also outrebounded
Calvin 37-30.
