Veenstra named MIAA Player of the Week

For the the third time this year and for the fourth time in his career,
Calvin sophomore Jeremy Veenstra has been named MIAA Player of the Week
    in men's basketball.

A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High
School, Veenstra racked up big numbers last week in conference victories
over Adrian and Albion. In an 81-67 victory over Adrian Wednesday
night, Veenstra scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He then
notched his 11th career double-double in an 86-78 win at Albion Saturday
as he scored 32 points and snared 10 boards. Veenstra's 32-point effort
was just two points short of a career-high and was his second 30-point
    effort of the season.

On the week, Veenstra was 18-of-25 from the floor, 20-of-24 from the
free throw line and 5-of-9 from three-point range. He was also credited
with four assists, one blocked shot and one steal while committing just
4 turnovers in 64 minutes of action.

Veenstra leads Calvin in scoring and rebounding with averages of 19.0
points and 7.3 rebounds a game. In conference games, Veenstra leads the
MIAA in scoring and field goal percentage as he is averaging 23.2 points
a game and connecting on 57.0 percent of his field goal attempts. In
addition, Veenstra is third in the MIAA in rebounding (7.8); seventh in
free throw percentage (.783) and 10th in assists (2.9) and blocked
    shots-per-game (0.8).

The pair of victories last week allowed Calvin to remain in sole
possession of first place in the MIAA standings as the Knights improved
to 18-4 overall and to 8-2 in the MIAA. Calvin holds a one-game lead
over second place Hope. The two rivals will meet Wednesday night at the
Holland Civic Center in a game scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm. Wednesday
night's game will be the 145th meeting between the two storied rivals
with Calvin holding a 74-71 series lead since the series began during
    the 1920-21 season.
