    MEN'S/WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

    Both Calvin swim teams came up with strong performances at the Wabash
    Invitational this past weekend as the Calvin women took second in an
    11-team field with 501 points while the Calvin men were third out of 11
    teams with 442 points. Wheaton took first in the women's competition
    with 678 points while DePauw captured first place in the men's
    competition with 459 points.

    In the men's competition, freshman Brad White (Dayton, OH) ed the way as
    White won the 50 and 100 freestyle with respective times of 21.80 and
    47.37 with both times just a few-tenths off the school record. White
    finished tied with teammate Jake VanderPlas (Palo Alto, CA) for 14th
    place on the individual points list as both swimmers recorded 40 points
    in the meet. The top performance by VanderPlas came in the 200
    backstroke as he was fifth with a time of 2:01.85. VanderPlas also took
    sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.00.

    Another highlight for the Calvin men was the 2-4 performance of
    sophomore A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Chris
    Veltman (Duarte, CA) in the 200 freestyle as Penninga came up with a
    second place time of 1:46.28 and Veltman a fourth-place time of 1:47.87.

    In the women's competition, Calvin was led by junior Kate Conrad (Calvin
    Christian) and sophomore Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) who tied for 14th
    place on the individual points list with 42 points each. Conrad was
    third in the 50 freestyle (25.72); fifth in the 100 freestyle (56.48)
    and seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:03.88). McGuin was third in the 200
    butterfly (2:19.30) and fourth in the 400 IM (4:54.83).

    Other highlights included junior Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian)
    taking second in the 50 freestyle (25:29) and junior Katie Nagelkirk
    (Holland Christian) taking second in the 100 freestyle (55.08) and
    fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.69). In addition, freshman Sara
    TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) was second in the three-meter diving competition
    with a score of 205.30 points.

    The women's team will return to action on Saturday, December 2 when it
    hosts St. Mary's at 1:00 pm. The men's team will not return to action
    until January 12 when it hosts Grand Valley State at 6:00 pm.
