    SWIM TEAMS SPLIT DUAL MEETS AT WHEATON

    The Calvin men's and women's swim teams split non-conference dual meets
    at Wheaton Saturday afternoon as the men edged Wheaton 116-113 while the
    women suffered their first defeat of the year, falling 126-105. The
    Calvin men are now 3-0 in dual meet competition while the women are 2-1.

    In the men's competition, Calvin captured the meet on the final event of
    the day, winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:15.20 with
    sophomore A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian), junior Jordan Zacharia
    (Annondale, VA), junior Chris Veltman (Duarte, CA) and freshman Brad
    White (Dayton, OH) combining for the win.

    White had a huge afternoon as he took first place in the 50 freestyle
    with a sizzling time of 21.90 while also winning the 100 freestyle in
    48.04. Other winners for the Calvin men included Penninga in the 500
    freestyle (4:57.73); Veltman in the 1000 freestyle (10:24.81) and
    freshman Joel Voss (Holland Christian) on the one-meter diving board and
    sophomore Brian Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) on the three-meter
    diving board.

    In the women's meet, Calvin received first place performances from
    sophomore Ginni Bakker (Kalamazoo Christian) in the 200 backstroke
    (2:21.03); sophomore Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) in the 200 butterfly
    (2:19.76) and freshman Sara TerHaar (Brandenton, FL) on both the one and
    three-meter diving boards.

    Both teams return to action next Saturday when they compete at the
    Wabash Invitational.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

    The defending national champion Calvin men's basketball team put on an
    impressive performance in an exhibition game Saturday night at the
    Calvin Fieldhouse as the Knights handed the McLaughlin All-Stars a
    116-80 defeat.

    Six Calvin players reached double-figures in scoring led by sophomore
    All-American candidate Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) who tossed
    in 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting including 4-of-5 from three-point range
    along with eight rebounds and four assists. Senior tri-captain Nate
    Burgess (South Christian) was next with 13 points while senior
    tri-captain Brian Krosschell (Grand Rapids Christian) had a
    double-double performance with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Junior point
    guard Jon Potvin (Gladstone) was also stellar with 12 points and five
    assists. In addition, freshmen Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) and Rob
    Holleman (Chandler, MN) looked good in their debuts in maroon and gold
    uniform as both players tallied 12 points with Holleman draining a pair
    of three-point shots.

    The McLaughlin All-Stars were led by former Central Michigan standout
    Melvin McLaughlin with 31 ponts while former Calvin All-American Aaron
    Winkle had 18. Former Grand Valley Laker Steve Harvey added 14 off the
    bench with South Christian High School graduated Jeff Baker tossing in
    12.

    Calvin went to the line 51 times in the up-and-down affair, converting
    38 free throw attempts for a 74.5 percent free throw clip. Calvin shot
    50.7 percent from the field and outrebounded the All-Stars 62-30.

    Calvin will officially open its season on Friday when it takes on Clarke
    College of Iowa at 5:00 pm in a first round game at the Wisconsin
    Lutheran Tip-Off Tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
