VOLLEYBALL
Calvin was victorious over St. Mary's College on Wednesday night to open
play in the MIAA tournament. Second-seeded Calvin wasted little time
with seventh-seeded St. Mary's, defeating the Belles 15-3, 15-5, 15-4.
The win moves Calvin into the MIAA semi-finals on Friday night where
they will face the Alma Scots at Hope's Dow Center at 5:30. Alma
defeated Adrian 15-10, 15-5, 16-14 Wednesday to advance to Friday's
semifinal. Hope will meet Kalamazoo in the second semi Friday at 8 pm.
Hope defeated Olivet in three games Wednesday while Kalamazoo defeated
Albion 3-1.
The winner of Friday's semifinals will play in the championship final
Saturday at 7 pm.
Against St. Mary's, Calvin fell behind 3-2 but Calvin would score the
next 13 points to go on to win 15-3. Calvin dominated the second game,
due to a 13-0 run to start the game and won 15-5. Calvin continued its
dominating style of play in the third game, taking it by a score of
15-4.
The Knights were led by senior middle hitter Rhonda Volkers who tallied
16 kills, 5 service aces and 3 digs. Also chipping in for Calvin was
senior outside hitter Ann Wiersma who had 9 kills, 6 digs, and 1 service
ace. Junior setter Sara Ahrenholz turned in 32 assists, 4 digs and 2
aces.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin defeated conference foe Albion Wednesday afternoon by a score of
3-1. Calvin moves to 9-9-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the MIAA with one game
left to play.
Calvin struck first in the 8th minute of play as Chalres Telep sent an
indirect penalty kick to the feet of Marcus Byeman and the Calvin had
its first lead 1-0. Albion would counter two and half minutes later as
Ben Godfrey scored off a Marcus Boynton assist. Halftime would roll
around with the score knotted at one apiece.
Calvin got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd half as Jason DeJonge took
a Brian Douma pass and rocketed his 18th goal of the year past the
Briton's goalkeeper. Calvin would add an insurance goal with 5 seconds
left as Jamie Bassow found the back of the net off of a pass from Joel
Tlachac.
In goal for the Knights in the first half was Matt Thelen as he recorded
1 save. Filling in for the 2nd half and coming up with some big saves
down the stretch was Justin Bouw as he collected in 6 saves.
Calvin will return to action for its last game on Saturday, November 4
as they host the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College at 1:30 pm. Regardless
of Saturday's outcome, Calvin is assured of a fourth place league
finish. Calvin will be attempting to break the .500 barrier for the
first time all season on Saturday.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
After a pair of dominating performances at last Saturday's MIAA
Championships, both Calvin cross country teams continue to remain at or
near the top of the national rankings. For the seventh consecutive
week, the Calvin men are ranked number-one in the country while the
Calvin women are ranked second. Keene State of New Hampshire remains
the second-ranked team in the men's poll while Middlebury of Vermont
remains the top-ranked team in the women's poll.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh is ranked third and St. Olaf is ranked fourth in the
women's poll while Oshkosh is also ranked third in the men's poll while
Wisconsin-LaCrosse is ranked fourth and three-time defending national
champion North Central ranked fifth.
Both Calvin teams are off until November 11 when they compete at the
Great Lakes Regional hosted by Hanover University of Indiana.
