CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, September 15, 2000 (compiled by Calvin
sports information director Jeff Febus and student assistant Ross
    Weener)

    MEN'S SOCCER

The Calvin Men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to
Aquinas by a score of 4-3. The game was an extremely hard fought battle
    as sixty-three fouls were called.

The Saint's struck first off an indirect penalty kick that was touched
by Tom Swiek and hammered home by Zach Fales. Calvin evened the score
with a nifty little chip from senior Jon Ver Merris (Western Michigan
Christian) that was booted into the goal by David Vander Lugt. Halftime
rolled around with a 1-1 score. The second half proved to be a little
more exciting. Only five minutes into the half Aquinas' Damien Nicey
scored with help from Steven Dobb and Zach Fales. Calvin countered with
a goal of its own twenty-five minutes later scored by Jon Ver Merris and
assisted by Brian Douma (Redmond, WA). Calvin took a commanding three
to two lead on a Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids) rocket that left the
Aquinas' goalkeeper looking. Standfest was assisted by a little flick
from Charles Telep (Sewickly, PA). All appeared to look like smooth
sailing for the Knights until a defensive lapse allowed Charles Ovalle
to sneak in for the tying goal. Regulation ran out with the score
deadlocked at three apiece. The score remained that way until the
second overtime session where Aquinas' Andrew Fearman put away the
game-winning goal in the one hundred and seventh minute.

The loss brings the Knight's record to 3-4, while raising the Saint's
record to 6-1-2. Calvin will open up league play on Wednesday, September
20 against the Hornets of Kalamazoo College. The game is scheduled to
    start at 4 PM

    VOLLEYBALL

Calvin improved to 8-2 on the year with pool play victories over
Baldwin-Wallace and Grove City Friday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio,
allowing the Knights to advance into Saturday's Gold Pool division.

    Calvin opened the tournament with a 15-6, 14-16, 15-12, 15-13 victory
    over Baldwin-Wallace and followed with a 15-12, 13-15, 15-12, 17-15 win
    over Grove City.

Senior Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) had a huge match against
Baldwin-Wallace with 24 kills and six blocks while senior Ann Wiersma
(Vista, CA) had 13 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Tricia Balkema
(Highland, IN) was also superb with 11 killds while junior setter Sara
Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) had 59 assists; senior Alicia DeGroot (Tulare,
CA) 12 digs and three aces and sophomore Melissa Pell (Fremont) seven
    blocks.

Volkers came up with another tremendous effort against Grove City,
racking up 22 kills, 17 digs and four blocks while Wiersma was equal to
the task, recording 26 kills and four blocks. Ahrenholz was the
offensive catalyst in the win, dishing out a season-high 72 assists
along with a pair of service aces. In addition, Pell had 14 kills and
seven blocks and sophomore Sarah Rottman (Holland Christian) two service
    aces.

Calvin opens play in the Gold Pool Saturday morning against Kenyon.
